Phew What A Scorcher.

Chris Evans | 11:10 UK time, Friday, 1 July 2011

Can you believe it ? One of the Magnificent 7 has hitched a lift in my car with Mad Max from Italy (the best driver I've ever been in a car with) and so I've had to jib in the team people carrier. No probs being with the team, but it's a bit much when someone nicks yer car - even if it is for charity. Come back!!!!

The time is 10.23 am on Friday, and we're winding our way through the leafy lanes of Hampshire en route to Thruxton. Been on and off the road for 24 hours, yet so much has happened it seems more like 24 days.

Somewhere in amongst the mayhem today I have to get to Goodwood to sort out Sunday, and make it to The One Show in time to join Welsh Alex for a chat with Sir Cliff on the sofa.

After that, it's back to The Cottage Inn near our house for our final drivers' dinner before the Dine and Disco half of this year's event kicks in.

Throw me a rope - I'm going in. Hopefully talk to you back on the radio Tuesday.

Geronimo !

Mr Chris, you are spoiling us with all these blogs. Thanks for the update it all sounds a little crazy but I am sure it's a lot of fun for those who have donated.

I don't blame you for having Monday off, you will need time to recover. Let's just hope it's not RM standing in....eek!

With regards to what Katyk said on tuther blog, to a certain extent I agree and this comes from a fan of Chris's, Radio 2, CiN, charity work and life in general :)

I've just got rid of a photocopier to some scrap men, who I am afraid, were very stereotypical of what one might imagine a scrap man to look like...lol.

The office clear up and out is still going strong, two weeks until I get some office buddies.

I've heard snippets of this on the CE shows in the morning (I usually get 6.30-7am), but can anyone tell me what models are involved in this? The car geek in me needs to know.

    Hi everyone,

Another beautiful day here in Ayrshire, better make the most of it while it lasts.

I also agree with KatyK to a certain extent but I have to say, if I could afford it I would definately be one of the magnificent 7, or at the very least at the Dine and Disco over the weekend, if you can afford it then why the heck not!!

    Have a good weekend everyone.

What a nuisance when work gets in the way of being on the blog!

MTF: sorry I missed you - thank you, quite a nice day here at the moment. xx

Katyk: I know what you mean - a couple of years ago, I would have agreed with you. I couldn't even bear to listen when Terry used to conduct the "things money can't buy" auction for CiN. But, last year, I changed my mind. The main aim for CiN is get as much money as possible for the children. Where it comes from, and in whatever denomination, it matters not. But I completely understand your frustration - the people who can bid for these fantastic prizes are, in financial terms, in another league. I think I am right in saying that there was a ballot for this particular prize - the general public could apply, and one "ordinary" person was chosen.

Gail: I'm with you - if I could afford it, I would have made a huge bid in order to be part of this weekend's extravaganza!

AliB: will it feel strange for you having to work with other people? I say this because I absolutely love it when I get the office to myself!

DJ500: if you go to Chris's page for today's and yesterday's shows, there are photographs of all the cars. Can't help you with the models, but they may be mentioned there!

    Almost lunchtime, thank goodness!

    C xx

Chrissie, Whoops I've already eaten my lunch, I just couldn't wait.

I know what you mean about the office, but I've been on my own for 6 months and sometimes it drives me crazy. There are two people moving in, one who works 8 hours a week and one who is out and about, so there will still be those times of peace and quiet.

Gail and Chrissie, Quite agree if I was rich! One day my Prince will come :) I'll have to rely on that as I don't do the lottery.

My boss rang me about 9:15 and said he would be in later - how later????

Hi Baggy: hope you have a great day tomorrow ... are you girls getting dressed up?!

AliB: I am quite, quite sure that your Prince will come. xx Re: your boss being late - last week my boss called the office and said that he would be in, around 10.30, with two clients. He said, make the sure place looks the business, flowers, fresh coffee, all the stuff. This I duly did, and they tipped up at 2.30 - they had been playing golf, and had no intention of ever being here at 10.30! Bosses!

G'Day me beauts! Just popped me head round the door as I am back at work on Fridays now after 3 months of Fridays off.

Chrissie I made the right decision, new job would have been horrendous and I like my family and free time and this job gives me that and now back on top with the spends as well now so Happy Bunny again.

I agree that the Drive and Dine and Magnificent 7 does seem to flaunt the fact that some people are in a better situation than others but it is for charity and you never know it might be one of us after tonights euromillions.

Pub tonite with our bestis buds, party tomorrow night and day in the sunshine at a Caravan/Motorhome show (weather permitting).

Yes, I confess I have a caravan although it hasnt been out this year toooooooooooooo bussssssy. Please dont think any less of me I promise I only use it for the odd weekend away. Enjoy my foreign breaks too much to make it my main holiday each year.

Have a good weekend fellow bloggers.

    Hiya bloggers,

    Did you miss me? ;o)

Chris - thanks for sharing the experience with us and making me feel as though I am part of it. Like millions of others I so wish I could be there, I would give anything to drive one of those cars.

KatyK - I know I will be in the minority but I have to disagree as I've said above it makes me feel part of it which is the closest I will ever get to actually being there.

I can't believe I've been back at work a week! I had a wonderful time with my sister. We ate, drank and shopped until we dropped! Not forgetting the highlight of course which was Take That wow what a show those boys put on. We had torrential rain and they were absolutely drenched but they gave us the performance of their lives and as for Robbie, well, he's number 1 in my books. Didn't see any of the egotiscal controlling Robbie that he is portrayed as, what we saw was a guy so overwhelmed by the love and support from his fans who did his utmost to give us a night to remember which he most certainly did. As luck would have it our seats were under cover - result!

Annie I thought about you when my sister and I were eating our fish and chips from the best chippie in the world! And also going over that rickety bridge - how that brought back memories of my childhood, loved going to the East Coast but hated going over that bridge.

Annie re the electronic cigs - my sister used to smoke 40+ cigarettes a day! Her boys and I gave up trying to get her to stop a long time ago. Last year she had a new kitchen fitted - white units - so decided she would no longer smoke in the house. She saw a flyer for the electronic ciggies in work and thought she would give it a go! It was never her intention to give up completely but she has done brilliantly and now only smokes two or three real ciggies a day. So good luck - I hope it works for you too xx

Chrissie - I wish you a lovely holiday - enjoy your break xx I am sure you will get lots of rest to help your leg fully recover.

I'm feeling really nervous about the Tennis today - crazy I know. I'm shouting for Tsonga - and not just for his tennis ability ;o) and of course channeling every ounce of positive vibe I have towards Mr Murray - c'mon Andy!

Looking forward to the Glasgow meets that are coming up.

Hope everyone is fine and dandy.

Take care and have a good weekend folks!

    Afternoon all,
KatyK from previous blog ...... I couldn't have put it better myself! Find the whole thingy with CIN auction nauseous, if you have that kind of money just donate it! But no, lets ram it down everyones throats just HOW much money we have got, and then rub it in even further by insisting we listen to a blow by blow account on the radio each day.
    Bitter? Me? Probably...!

First of all, Mary: yes, I have missed you! Lovely to hear you had such a terrific holiday with your sister. As I have discovered this year, sisters are precious beyond words (as are brothers) so I love to hear happy family stories. xx

Jo: you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. I would just say that if you don't listen to Chris Evans then I wonder how you know the money thing is being rammed down your throat? Hey Ho, this is one of those situations where we all have our own opinion, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Leaving aside the morality of the whole "Magnificent 7" thing, who actually thinks that listenening to somebody starting a car constitutes quality radio?

The only reason that I got to hear it was that I was in a cafe for an all too rare fry-up and they had the radio on, so I did not have option of the off switch.

Debs, so glad you've opened FNWC - been looking after 1yr old and 6yr old today and am totally done in. At least the trek to school at lunchtime with the buggy to pick up the 6yr old is over for a few weeks.

Hello and Happy Saturdays All Round
    :^)

Apologies for my distance this week - have had to deal with some sad family news from France - but I've been catching as much of the show as I can.
In fact I spent ages looking for the Live Film Feed on Thursday morning because I assumed the setting off from Chris's home would be filmed like it was last year. Not this time, eh? Perhaps it was a technical nightmare last time out.

Having just read back a couple of blogs, I noted the entry from Katyk and am now wondering if anyone thinks this was me! No-o-o-o-oooo - although ..
.. in these heady times of grandiose and media-led charitable gestures and events [it was all SO private back in my youth] I suppose it can be galling for those who resent having someone else's wealth so freely flaunted.

Having never been remotely materialistic it doesn't bother me. However they've acquired their cash - they are prepared to part with a large slice of it in return for a jolly weekend. And if the Beeb and Chris have facilitated this - then it is deserving of some airtime.

Surely the issue here is - who benefits?
Given the choice, and with spare cash in my hand - I would choose a children's charity all the way.
    Every time. No hesitation.

Others may prefer animal charities, or birds, or wildlife, or all the health and research agencies, the armed forces [god forbid! and I shall spare you my perhaps, controversial views on that] and the many other grateful recipients of our hard-earned.

A child does not choose. Cannot choose.
To be born, to have inadequate parents, to be ill, to be abused, to be sold or stolen, to be deprived of water, food, shelter .. to be a carer to siblings or elders .. a child has no real legal rights, no power to make their own decisions ... I could go on, but I won't .

So as far as I'm concerned, Chris. his cronies and his new best friends can f*nny around all they like with a set of smelly cars, they can scoff all the foie gras there is the south of England, they can show off to their heart's content at Thruxton and Goodwood, hobnob with Jody and disco dance with Paolo.

Just so long as the children get the money.

For me, I shall be staying indoors and avoiding the sun. Yesterday's forcast for cloud in Telford did not stay true, wall to wall sun all afternoon there. On arriving home I saw that I was the colour of a ripe tomato, sunburnt nose, shoulders and hair parting - its still hurting now and just have to wait for the inevitable peeling....

A classic case of not realising the sun can do harm even if its not that hot....

Anyway, well done to my team, they didnt win, but they all had fun and raised a shed load of money for a childrens hospice. Good Show!

Right best get on doing nothing much
    Happy Roast Day everyone

    Afternoon each

Red hot in Fife today. I had to do a couple of hours work at lunchtime and am just waiting for it to cool off before I go and cut the grass.

Have just made a list of authors I need to research - from the observer's summer reads.

Hope everyone is ok and enjoying this lovely weather.

loved listening to the magnificent 7 and all the fantastic money raised. I know that I could never raise that to ever take part but the best thing for me is manning the phones at bbc towers with my fellow bloggers and can't wait for November.

How's everybody? Hope all is well. Warm warm here in Norfolk as I guess it is everywhere

Annie, anyone interesting on the authors list? That sounds like a lot of books you need to buy. Where will you put them all? ;-)

I've just treated myself to Dawn French's book but I'm saving it til i have a while to sit and read

Just had a friend pop round with her son who's just started driving. He's been regaling us with stories about wild nights out!

    Evening all,

Well that's another day done ,and nearly behind us ,just enough time to get a couple of well earned glasses of the red drank.

The things I set out to do today have all been achieved bar one ,and thats the ironing and I wasn't going to do that at this time of night .I like to do the ironing in day light ,I think you can see what you're doing a lot better then .I did however put some bedding plants into the garden instead .

Annie ,you certainly have a job and a half there haven't you ,I'm not much of reader so I wouldn't know where to start ,good luck with it .

Sezza ,I watched Sister Act also ,always like a whoopi Goldberg film.
and on the subject of little one staying little our 13 year old grandson is now taller than me ,hes not 14 untill September . I honestly don't know what my daughters feeding him ,same goes for no 1 grandson hes taller .

KK ,hope you doing OK now .Hope the boys are doing OK also. And about CIN ,its not the amount you give ,its how you give and in which ever form you wish to give it that counts .

Evening all, without wanting to bring the blog down I just hope the donors of large sums of money to "drive and dine" managed to watch the news this evening and the plight of the starving children in Africa and dug deep into those pockets to help, without a prize at the end of it. Sorry , that's just how I feel, so so sad to see the news tonight. Jo

  • Comment number 80.

    Joran,

no you're not bringing the blog down ,just stating a fact ,I haven't seen the news tonight but did catch something on the radio about the drought in Ethiopia.
The worst one in sixty years I think it said .
and yes it's very sad indeed ,and there doesn't seem to be an answer to all this tragedy does there..

Bids, I know there just seems to be more and more each year! Feelmore guilty I suppose, I have had such a lovely day enjoying the sunshine, had a lovely BBQ, family around and then just sit and relax and wham! There it is, someone elses Sunday afternoon so different to ours:(( hate it.

  • Comment number 82.

    Joran,
I know what you mean ,you're just going about your normal daily routine and then it's like a bolt out of the blue and it hits you .

Isn't that what started Band aid off,I often wonder how these politicians sleep at night ,because after all it's them that dictate what happens to this world of ours .
Seems to me that instead of throwing all this money into new buildings for them selves ,share the money out a little more evenly.

    Morning everyone.

Wow what a weekend, lovely night with mates on Friday, Saturday I was told that nephew and his wife (I got them together) are having a baby in January, excited isnt the word for what I am feeling.

Caught up with friends who have moved to Wales recently. Evening at a birthday party with old friends of the other half. Home to a houseful of 20 year old boys who had watched the fight and taken in copious amounts of alcohol.

Yesterday, got a wedding invite and invite to a West Indian Bridal Shower, should be a new experience

Sunday afternoon spent at Bridgnorth Severn Valley Railway for a 1940's event which was brilliant as there was entertainment and lots of people in authentic costume. Then lunch in a pub on the way home.

This weekend was idyllic and what weekends were made for.

I know some of you are having a hard time at the moment and I send big ((((hugs)))) to you all stay strong guys.

    Evening each

Been a lovely day again. Little granddaughter and I spent the day in the garden covered in suncream. That's my last stint for a while - am in Arran next week then her mum's starting her maternity leave.

Yes, am going to have lots of books to read, haven't decided which ones I'll get yet, although Ian Rankine recommended a book for 80p! It's called Bye Bye Baby by Allan Guthrie.
