August, August?

Chris Evans | 10:12 UK time, Monday, 1 August 2011

Inspirational, venerable, of higher rank. The bad boy in the big boy stakes when it comes to all of our months.

August, we welcome you today.

Out there on your own, when most of Europe uses you to take a break from the other eleven months of the year.

In many ways, you are our hammock and I for one thank you for that. In fact, I'm off for a bit of hammock time right now. I was up at half past three today, I'm half whacked.

Have a good day y'all.

Hurrah Christoff well mind 'ow you're swingin' in that hammock. My dear old Uncle Jim ended up wit terrible vertigo after a somewhat enthusiastic embarkation into 'is 'ammock whilst servin' in the Navy during the last Unpleasantness. The consequent near-garrottin' was bad enough, but it was the batterin' he received from the 20-stone chap 'e landed on that caused the vertigo.

    Achtung my friend.

Ah, my Uncle Jim, bless 'im. My favourite tale of his from 'is Navy days was the time somebody, er.. ok I quote, "Did it in Cookie's 'at."

Now, Cookie was the chef. An unassuming chap, not given to over-excitement, and yes. Some eejit left 'im a deposit in 'is hat. And so the chaps waited for Cookie's reaction. Day after day, until finally they could resist no longer. Uncle Jim piped up.

"Ere, Cookie. Did you ever find out who Did it in your 'at?"

Cookie eyeballed them for a moment as they sniggered and snorted.

"No," says he, "But I know who ate it."

Right. Am off to Listen Again to Danny Baker; can't believe I missed THAT, I suspect am in for a treat...

    Morning Peeps.

I am shattered.... have put in my order for a quiet weekend forthcoming.

Ma and Pa have had a lovely time and yesterday we went to Bridgnorth to a lovely country pub on the Ludlow road for dinner to finish off the weekend.

Father is going home with a considerably lighter wallet and mother has a grin on her face which makes her look like she has a piece of watermelon stuck in her mouth.

Me and t'other half are shattered and the house is a bomb site so this week I shall be mostly tidying up.

Glad the bloggers had a good meet on the Chase. Weather was glorious on Saturday afternoon, well done Deevs sounds like you pulled it out the bag yet again.

Have a lovely week everyone what ever you are doing.

    Hello CE & Everyone.

Happy August! White rabbits! Black hares! Pinch punch!

You've just reminded Chris to change my calendar, will do so immediately.

There's nothing I'd like better than to lie in a hammock in the back garden today but a) there's only one tree and b) it's raining here on the Wirral peninsula.

Now trying to decide what to put in my sarnie!

    Hi everyone:

Just checking in - hope everyone's ok.

Good to see that a great time was had by all on Saturday - glad you got the weather and everyone had a lot of fun.

Nothing much to report from me - busy week lies ahead, my boss finishes on Thursday for his two week holiday, so I will be kept on my toes for the next few days!

Just to say, MTF: lovely to see you popping in. I really miss you, and your nature updates!

Oh, and I did mean to say to Debs: yes, the evening at the O2 was just fantastic - I think of it often. I was aware at the time just how important an evening it was, but I could kick myself that I didn't speak properly to all the people I really wanted to - it was all a bit overwhelming, if that doesn't sound too crazy!

    Afternoon All,

It is indeed August and the sun is shining in North Kent, so not all bad. August is a busy month, two family birthdays, a 25th Wedding Anniversary, a Christening in North Wales and then the annual "yoof" camp (probably in the rain!). I'll be glad when it's September :)

Glad the picnic was a roaring succes, the pictures look fab.

    Good morning all,

Another lovely sunny day down here on the south coast. No clouds ,just wall to wall blue.
Yes Chris I agree with you August,is always a nice month ,and with all the kiddies on holiday it takes on a different feel . Mr B and myself decided to take the bus yesterday and leave the car at home ,niormally the bus doesn't have many people on it ,but yesterday it was full to bursting with the little ones and there parents going off to the beach.

But what I found strange was ,that on the way home we called in to see one of our daughters and boys, older boy is already bored and wants to go back to school!!!

Well it's just time for me to have another cupppa before my working day begins ,so take care all and have a good day.

    Bids.xxx.

  • Comment number 16.

    Morning all

LOL Bids - Nic's son only has to be un-occupied for about 5 minutes before the "I'm Bored" chant kicks in!

I do feel sorry for the little ones in the summer holidays tho - last week I went to one of the supermarkets with a clothing range and everywhere you looked there were signs declaring "Back To School" with uniform shirts at reasonable prices! They'd not even broken up for summer at this point.

Off to get a coffee, then as Arnie said, I'll be back!

    Hi everyone:

Another wet day in Glasgow. As I always say though, it's good for the complexion!

Sezza: glad you enjoyed your day out with your boys.

Bids: isn't that just typical from your grandson! He'll be missing his wee pals, no doubt, but I'm sure he'll get into the swing of things! I wish I was on holiday for six weeks, or whatever.

I was reading yesterday that (apparently!) men are helping more with housework, etc. How's about this? MsS bought a new outfit for a very special night out last Saturday with her boyfriend, and a few of his friends and their girlfriends. New lovely top and skirt, and shoes. She left our house, in a taxi, got to his house five minutes later and by then, the shoes had come apart at the buckle! Utter panic - the shoes go with the outfit perfectly (brown) no other shoes will do! What does the bold boyfriend do ... he only SEWS the shoe back together. Now, is that boy a keeper or what?!

    Hope everyone is ok.

    Morning All,

Sorry you've got rain Chrissie, I'll blow some of our sunshine your way; and that boy does sound like a keeper :)

I'm a bit scared to blog as I thought I'd broken it yesterday, but I guess everyone is busy with school holidays and sunshine.

Took my car in for a service today, had to wait, so got it there for 8 and they'd done it by 9:15. Popped to the Golden Arches for a coffee and a read of Heat magazine, then back to the showroom to wait and I am pleased to say that they were listening to Radio 2.

Week three of no hot water, but I am pleased to say that all will be fixed on Thursday and I can't wait!!!

Right I'm going to put the kettle on.

    afternoon peeps
Jumping in whilst I eat my salad lunch. 2nd day for PlaneJanet's lovely lettuce accompanied as yesterday by leftover couscous and mixed bean salad - from the Saturday picnic! If it aint fluffy it's edible (I be a TOG!)

Yesterday's protein was feta cheese - a little goes a long way in the flavour stakes.
Today, it is chicken livers, flash fried last night and chopped up amongst the greenery!

Glad to see everyone is well. Weather is a bit odd at the moment though.
Rain was totally vertical yesterday afternoon so garden didn't need watering. Today was a dull start but sun is out in force at the moment - long may it continue.

Chrissie - GD's boyfriend is definitely a keeper! What a find.
My brother regularly does my sis-in-law's french manicure - seems he gets the white tips neater than she does! Also he clothes shops for her and one of the nicest outfits she has, he bought - on his own, correct size and everthing with shoes to match!
The earrings I had from them for my birthday were his choice and are my default, go-with-anything, accessory.

AliB - hot water ...? are you a softy? Cold showers are supposed to be character building!

    Hello Everyone.

I was just going to say "a lovely warm sunny day here on the Wirral peninsula" but in the last five minutes it suddenly changed to VERY heavy rain and wind. Had to jump up and close the window but the net curtain is already soaked.

Oh! As I type the rain has stopped and the sun is shining again. Will open the window to dry out the curtain.

Crumpy: Glad to hear that my lettuce is going down well. I'm a great believer also in - if it's not furry - it's OK.

The weather here in North Wales is strange. Yesterday we had three lots of scything down rain. Got home no more than 12 miles - not had a drop. What's that all about?

Like Maddy Moon we had smoe more rain today wonder if it has @ home - if not the watering cans will be out on those lettuces!

Hope all are well - Baggy send us up some of that sunshine - it's really grey here.

    Hello again!

Bright sunshine here now but for how long?

I've just vacuumed upstairs so feel that I've done something useful today.

I've decided to have 'posh' cheese on toast for my tea. Grated cheese mixed to a paste with a little milk, chopped ham and pineapple pieces. Other toppings can be used, i.e. mushrooms, pepperoni, in fact anything that could go on a pizza.

    August Schmaugust.

Where's the ruddy sun gone. I've bin sat 'ere 2 days in the deckchair in me back garden in Wigan in the flowery bikini, lathered wit Factor 30 salad cream (Renee's bin at it again; God knows what she's put on the lettuce), an' the This Summer's Hot Pick wide-brim sun 'at; an' what a wally I look. So far all I've achieved is listenin' back to Desert Island Discs an' a week a Womans' Hour, fixin' the floor of the caravan tit-box an' almost puttin' the gardener in 'ospital when I leapt outa me chair to do battle wit a large ugly horse fly which wanted me dead, an' forgot I'd untied me halter neck.

Poor chap, just as 'e was eatin' 'is cherry bun.

Anyway it's not funny. 'Ow come Hurricane Hilda waits till I'm in the middle a the Irish Sea to kick up a fuss, 'ow come it only rains when I've no brolly an' am wearin' espadrilles, thus ensurin' I end up walkin' like Bride a Frankenstein wit a slaphead. I could irrigate the desert, me. All I'd 'ave to do is take me heated rollers out, slap on the mascara an' stand in the middle a the Sahara, an' splat.

Still. Mustn't grumble I suppose. In me next life I might be that 'orse fly I just splatted. (Or the gardener.)

The back garden is beginning to look like a tropical rain forest, really feel I should tackle it this weekend but need mr bp help to mow the lawns (I have a bad back) and help with the more heavy duty stuff - what do you think? Maybe I can come up with a bribe or two

Nothing exciting to report so I'll toddle off to my desk, but only one more sleep Ali for hot water! whoo hoo :-) That shower will feel soooooooo good. A bit overcast here, but VERY warm. It is on days like this that I am not too keen on my leather executive chair!

Thanks for the kind words about my hot water, I must confess that it has been a struggle. But hopefully this time on Friday I will be able to report that I have had a nice long hot shower. Of course I have been having these the past three weeks, just not at my house ;) The parentals are coming over tonight with boxes of dust sheets, so I can cover everything over. But I have a feeling that come Saturday I shall be giving the flat a spring clean.

Baggy my dear heart. With that bad back, DO NOT TOUCH the garden. Honestly, am not kiddin', you don't want to aggaravate a serious problem wit your back at your age. I remember a few years back, when I was struck down wit the extremely un-glamorous lumbago, couldn't believe it; and let me tell you, it took forEVER to heal. Luckily I haven't had it since; then again I haven't bungee-jumped or done any Bouncy Castle Acrobatics since, either.

Mind. It's the Brother-Outlaw's Big 6-0 this weekend, so I'd best dig out the truss. No way am I missin' outa the Pass The Broom Handle Round The Body Without Lettin' Go competition, or the Wheelbarrow Human Cannonball. Them titles are here to STAY.
