A typical Football Focus Friday

Post categories:

Dan Walker | 07:11 UK time, Thursday, 4 November 2010

This week's Football Focus programme comes live from Old Trafford. Our on-the-road shows tend to divide opinion but we've already been to Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester City so it's about time we dropped in at the home of Manchester United.

And it is an appropriate time to visit for several reasons:

The ground witnessed its 1,000th Premier League goal last weekend;

In the meantime, I thought I would give you an idea of what a typical busy Friday is like for the Focus team. Last week involved a morning of filming, an interview in the afternoon and an early evening of script writing and tweaking.

It all started at...

0655 BST - Rise like a salmon to the strained combination of 'dada' and 'daddy' coming from the girls' bedroom. Change various nappies and have the world's fastest shave, leaving myself with a little nick under the left nostril.

0720 - Speedy shirt-ironing required. No need to do the back because I'm wearing a jumper.

0745 - Breakfast consists of finishing off my eldest daughter's bowl of cereal and a hastily prepared piece of toast with lashings of honey and marmite.

0821 - Emotional Railway Children-style goodbye at front door before I leg it to the station to catch the train to Waterloo.

0920 - Arrive at Waterloo and meet producer Emma and camera warrior Carol. They are both necking large coffees. Our job is to film the opening, which is all about the clocks going back and the arrival of winter. We knock off the link under the big clock and power walk down to the Millennium Wheel.

0955 - Film a link walking alongside the Wheel and then with Big Ben in the background. We reposition slightly before knocking off Friday Focus at the side of the Thames.

1040 - Walk back to Waterloo carrying the camera tripod. A nobbly bit at the top catches me next to my shoulder, bringing about the same symptoms as a .

1050 - Get in the van and leave for the to film the last two sections of the opening. Hunger sets in after I see a couple tucking into some burgers.

1124 - Arrive at Greenwich and film in front of a gathered crowd of about 100. Take number three goes down particularly well and receives a ripple of applause. They are all German exchange students and want to know what on earth we are doing.

Filming in GreenwichOut and about in Greenwich

1148 - Stomach starting to grumble. Consider stealing a child's packet of crisps but talk myself out of it.

1218 - Leave Greenwich and head towards West Ham. Drop Emma off at Bromley-By-Bow tube to head back to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to start editing. Pick up a couple of packets of crisps and hope that Carol opts for Ready Salted rather than the Thai Sweet Chicken. Sadly, she goes exotic and I'm lumbered with the dull one.

1255 - Stop at Newbury Park tube to pick up Tim, who is producing the Avram Grant interview. Tim has Shaun from a ´óÏó´«Ã½ apprentice scheme with him but sadly Carol's van only has three seats so Shaun has to huddle down in the back for 30 minutes.

1325 - Arrive at West Ham's training ground. Bloke on door says "you can't bring that van in here" but the friendly press officer steps in and guess what? We can fit the van in.

1335 - We lug all our lighting guff and equipment into the press area and stop for a quick cuppa and ginger crunch cream.

1336 - Abandon crunch cream as we are asked to set up in sports hall next door while Mr Grant holds his press conference.

1348 - Waiting around in the sports hall doing keepy-uppy with a football the players have left behind.

1410 - Press officer awkwardly opens the door to tell us that Mr Grant will be five minutes just as I am getting a sweat on practising my .

1417 - Grant arrives.

1435 - Interview completed, we shake hands and Mr Grant disappears back towards his office to mull over West Ham's trip to Arsenal.

1455 - Leave training ground for long drive back. Editor rings to say Manchester United have confirmed we can do the show live from Old Trafford next week and we'll interview Rio Ferdinand on the Friday. Start thinking about how we can make the show work and what other elements we need for it. Would be nice to get David Gill on to answer some questions from supporters.

1620 - Abandon car on the A40 with Carol in dire traffic. Hop on the tube back to ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV centre.

1655 - Arrive back at base camp and go through the script and check various emails.

1700 - Pop down to the mail room to pick up the new Premier League football that has arrived. Boot it down the corridor, narrowly missing a fire alarm.

1715 - Call from the ´óÏó´«Ã½ News Channel to say I am not needed as a guest on Sportsday at 1830 because they are doing wall-to-wall coverage of the latest bomb scare.

1725 - Fiddle with the script for our weekly round-up (60 seconds in Focus) and then pop down to the edit suite to voice it. On the way back, pick up a chocolate croissant from the ´óÏó´«Ã½ cafe.

1755 - Drop in on the News Channel to give them some interviews for their weekend bulletins and then meet the Focus editor to watch all the pieces for the show. The good thing about this is that most of the edit suites have a selection of fruit in them and, occasionally, a three-pack of bourbons.

1925 - Back in the office to tinker with the script, discuss rough areas of chat before going back downstairs to watch the rest of the pieces.

2030 - Jump in the car and head home with everything in place safe in the knowledge that I will be back in precisely 11-and-a-half hours.

Hopefully that gives you a bit of an idea of what goes into the show. This week - as mentioned - the whole thing comes live from Old Trafford. For those wondering, Sir Alex will not be making an appearance but Nicky Butt will be our guest alongside Lee Dixon.

You'll also hear from Rio Ferdinand, Olly Murs and Kevin Doyle. We've also got an exclusive interview with Liverpool's new owner John W Henry ahead of the Chelsea game.

If you've got any questions about the show or want to suggest a classic Premier League Old Trafford goal (for or against United) then let me know.

As promised, here is the latest themed football team from twitter (twitter.com/danwalkerbbc). I give you the Oceans XI squad.

Disappointing news about shaving Dan, you're not taking part in Movember? My work has a 'tache team, what style do you reckon i should adopt? At the moment I'm heading towards WWI fighter pilot, although "The Trucker" is also a consideration.

    Excellent Blog, Dan.
Looking forward to the show from Old Trafford, but you've gotta mention FC United in the FA Cup R1 too...
Best Premier League goal at Old Trafford for me has GOT to be Eric Cantona against Sunderland in 1996.
I remember the reaction of the crowd as he lobbed Perez, we all thought it had gone over...

  • Comment number 4.

Really great blog Dan. Why don't you make yourself a nice packed lunch to take with you when your filming?! Then you wouldn't resort to considering stealing children's crisps! But seriously, clearly a lot of time and effort goes into making the show, and you can tell. I hope you get Sundays off!

  • Comment number 5.

What an absolute reeker of a miss Dan... even with the shoes on!

You should bring you team up to Scotland and do an investigative piece on the drama with Ref's up here the now.. if you bring that van you had in the above piece you could film it in a Scooby Doo style with the Mystery Machine..

Hi Dan, nice piece..hell of a lot of travelling and loads of waiting around by the sound of things (nearly 5 hours all in all for the 18 min interview with the Baron) - not all glamour then but variety is the spice of life!?

You need one of those time management experts (sure there's loads lurking the corridors of the Beeb)...iron weeks shirts all in one go, make a packed lunch for those tedious road trips ;)

Why do all these American highflyers always use their middle names' initial - John 'Dubya' Henry?

Did you get to keep the new Premier League ball in the end or did it end up in Warehouse 13 with Garth's Wayne Rooney interview? You should take it with you and get all the celebs and alike to sign it for Pudsey bear.

Really good blog, Dan. But how come you caught the train in to London in the morning but drove home from ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV Centre in the evening?

'Emotional Railway-Children style goodbye' - this cracked me up.

However, honey and marmite? You need help Dan. Try strawberry jam and banana on toast, you'll find you're no longer shunned by people when you breath on them.

Also, just a quick question in case you have the time to answer it, what do you think of all the Bale hype? I'm a Spurs fan and love him (and our performance Tues) but think its getting a bit out of hand...

  • Comment number 11.

Without re-reading it, so I might make a plonker of myself, didn't you start your journey by running for a train, and then finishing it by jumping in the car home? had you left the car at the job then over night?
By the way, that is not the breakfeast of champions.

  • Comment number 12.

Hi Dan, Great blog. Cancel the work experience offer. I'm tired after reading it.

    Two bits of advice:
    1. Please clarify, 25 min to iron your shirt (Longer than Mr Grants interview)? Maybe worth doing the night before for that extra 25 min beauty sleep.
    2. Bring a 50Litre cool box with you for 2 reasons. Your daily food intake obviously and to sit on when waiting around. Oh and thirdly for your camera woman to stand on now and again when filming you!!

Really enjoyed the Baron interview. No doubt he is a sound bloke if working with him everyday.

Very impressed with the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s equal opps policy having a female camerawoman and producer. Can you say things like this now a days. Keep it to yourself.

Back to food, try a tuberware box of the foloowing from tescos. Soyo Beans, dried bananas and the dried pineapples hits the spot if you've a sweet tooth.

It shows us the long hours the ´óÏó´«Ã½ team do, but no doubt you forgot to tell us your off Sunday and Monday and and half day somewhere else to compensate. (Only joking), but seriously you deserve 11 1/2 hours off after a day like that. If its like my house, your handed 2 babies when you walk through the door and you look forward to going back to work for the break/rest.

Sorry but I'm useless at those themed teams. Nothing to offer.

So looking to FF on Saturday. Enjoy. Back to my Jamaica Ginger cake.

A shame it was just the best premiership goals otherwise I'd have plumped for the Beckham Greek effort of 2001.

I believe it should be narrowed as the best goals scored by the away side at Old Trafford, as this makes it even more special.

For this, I opt for the Tiago effort of 2005. Amazing strike, keeper stands and watches, and the reaction from Mourinho still has me laughing to this day.

I also remember an amazing Hasselbaink diagonal half volley thunderbolt in around 2000 or 2001 which was pretty special.

Oceans 11 - I like Oystern John but prefer John Oyster (Oster)

Interesting article Dan, especially for all those students of media like myself. As you mentioned in your opening paragraph, the on the road show divides opinion. Unfortunately, I am on the side of disliking it. I find the shows format very disconcerting for some reason, probably as I usually watch on Saturday morning eating my breakfast and find the show to busy. While the FF format did need to be updated, some times less is more, and all I require are; some interesting interviews, nice goals/skills and humorous footy analysis / anecdotes. A perfect to start the Saturday.

    John Scales perhaps?

And also, if you're looking for memorable goals at Old Trafford, perhaps you could dabble in a bit of David Backham. I heard a rumour that he 'virtually played Greece on his own' in 2001 before slotting home a trademark. A couple of football fans might remember that moment (at a push of course). The same man also scored a pearler against Wales.

Just to rub it in, I was not only at both games, but was sitting behind the goal for THAT free kick. My then 20 year old sister cried in her seat next to me.

#3 Notice you mention FC United. Even as Liverpool fan I think it's great what they are doing and fully deserve their FA Cup date. Just finished reading the FC United 'Tears of a fan' article on here and with the mention of AFC Wimbledon got me thinking as to what the reaction from former Man Utd or even current players has been to FC United. I know the situation is different with Wimbledon because the previous incarnation of the club is gone but I know former players have been very involved with them and in the case of Marcus Gayle even played for the club.

As far as former United players commenting on FC the best so far has been Eric Cantona himself saying that the club has a great philosophy. Think it all came from the 'Looking for Eric' film a few years ago when he was made aware of it. A few former players have done Christmas dinners but not exactly played. The closest we've got is Tunji Moses (son of Reme) and Rhodri Giggs (brother of Ryan). Thats as much as I know of.

Without wanting to blow my own trumpet, I don't get along to FC United games as I still have Season Tickets at Old Trafford. It's not an excuse, I just don't want someone to take my place and treat the place like a Theme Park.

Dan, Good to be back,I've missed the last few of your blogs but spent more time bagging whitetails. :-) :-O

It appears that you have quite interesting days; you provided a good enough piece of writing to suggest you actually work for a living- this might keep the license fee grumps silent for a week or two. (When living in rip-of-Britain I was one of them .)

Glad that you journalism / TV presenter skills surpass your footie skills, at least as evidenced in the short clip embedded in this blog.
All the jabber about food, mainly junk food, always makes me hungry. Had too much seafood of late to join in the Oceans 11 banter. Living on the coast of New England we have access to fine sea food, it is not in any way a shame that my wife does not like anything from the ocean.

As far as showing a Man U goal please could you put minute or two of footage showing Ruud Van N. missing that penalty with Keown then in his face? Or the Nani goal which I still have not seen. Turn a blind eye to licensing agreements.

Keep up the entertaining work! I'm sure Mottie-the-mentor is proud of you.

I'm not quite sure why you felt the need to provide us with a chronology of your day, I found it somewhat dull. And why iron a shirt at all if you're wearing a jumber. All you really need to do is make sure the collar's ironed. And as for starting with a feature on the clocks going back and the arrival of winter, well, zzzzzzzzzz. What next, the fact that it's getting darker earlier, or that Santa will shortly be getting his sleigh and reindeers ready for the kiddy-widdies? Quite a marathon day there daniel son. agree with #11 you missed out on the breakfast of champions. but perhaps you need to pack a lunchbox of champions? reggae reggae wraps are particularly astonishing.

would be interested to know what rio's favourite OT moments are. rooney v newcastle (2006?) and cantona's chip over the defence for irwin to score (can't remember who against) would be amongst my faves.

read an old article you did in a newspaper about your faith and not working sundays. its fantastic that the bbc has accomodated you in this way. i have always had the same belief but my employers are far less accomodating.

I miss Kevin, and his advice on how you could significantly improve the programme and your blog. I found him not at all condescending. I'm sure that if he were here, he'd tell you to pull your finger out and justify your position with the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Good blog again Dan. Nice to have something a bit light hearted and also a blogger that returns and comments when people have made the effort to say something.

06:55 awoken by the calls of the girls from their bedrooms?

May I ask what it's like to get a bit of a lie in on a week day? I'm lucky if it gets much past 05:30 before the 'daddy', 'daddy', 'daddy' starts.

Marmite and honey is just wrong, even though I am a massive fan of marmite (especially on taost with melted butter and cheese).

Right, at work so can't be writing on here all day, I've got oceans related footballers to be thinking about.

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for another refreshing and insightful blog. I think you have been a breath of fresh air for football focus and it's clear you are putting a lot of effort in to finding new ways in which to present the programme and how it is made.

I was really disappointed to read all the negative comments for your last blog I think these people are simply too demanding and 99% couldn't do anywhere near as good a job as you do. I'd definitely wager most of them are older viewers/readers as I know you are definitely very popular with younger people, at least all the ones I kow!

As a student of film, television and media i really enjoy your relaxed and progressive form of presenting. I think if you had been lucky enough to have a decent footballing career you could be a long term successor to the great Linekar on MOTD.

Having said all the above I would probably steer clear of SOME of the bacon sarnie type stuff but it IS part of what makes your style unique and refreshing.

Keep up the good work and I have everything crossed for a bombshell return to the beeb of Sir Alex!!!!
