The Welsh market town of Brecon hosted its 23rd annual jazz festival two weeks ago - organisers hailed it as another successful year, but many visitors were disappointed by the reduction in street music claiming the town lacked its usual festive atmosphere. Brecon Jazz directors said the decision had been taken with public safety and police costs in mind, but they've promised to take a fresh look in the light of public reaction - see the full range of comments on the . Meanwhile the festival season continues in Wales with events in (Sept 1-3), (Sept 15-17) and (Oct 6-8). See my for more details and other news.

what's your take on it, Andy? is the street music that important? having never been to Brecon (shame) i can't say. is it the thing that makes Brecon unique? do any other UK festivals do it?

The street music definitely sets Brecon apart from other festivals I've been to, such as Cheltenham Jazz and Cardiff Worldport. In fact you can go to those two cities and not realise there's a festival taking place unless you're inside one of the venues. Marlborough has a little more atmosphere, probably because like Brecon it's a small market town where all the traders and residents get into the spirit of things. Even stars like Scott Hamilton says this is the reason they keep coming back to Brecon year after year. In a big city it's harder for a festival to make an impact.

it's not something i've seen elsewhere either. it'd be a good thing for the london jazz festival to do too, though i suppose that the free events on the south bank put the profile up a bit for the general public.
