Tony tells it like it is
Tony Bennett has had at his home country for not contributing anything to world culture other than jazz..."Fifty years from now people will be bowing to Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, just like impressionist painters like Monet, who were starving in their day. The Americans don't even know what they have come up with."Unsurprisingly Tony's come in for as a result. Which seems a bit unfair really...

Post your commentIn some ways, Tony Bennett is right. Today, we have Reality TV and other forms of TV and Music which is void. Jazz is one of the best forms of art that evolved in America as a mixture of different art forms in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
For those who criticize Tony Bennett, I would like to say that only in America can an artist like him [who has been marginalized in the 1970's and 1980's] can make a comeback in the 1990's for future generations.
Another Gift of America to the world has been the Singer Beyonce.
We in America have never apprecaited jazz because we prefer the cheap forms of entertainment [Britney Spears, Tom Cruise....].

I would say that kind of thing's happened in the UK too - Tom Jones, Tony Christie and others have made a comeback after several years spent outside the mainstream. I'm not sure it's a good thing in their case though!

I would also like to add that I am a Jazz Lover. I think the USA would be better if it listened to Jazz in all of its dimensions.
