A New Ambassador for Jazz
A plainly ludicrous headline (who was the old ambassador for jazz? and where's the embassy?) but with Gwilym Simcock echoes some of the points made in Alex's post. It's interesting that Gwilym suggests that the recent changes at Ronnie Scott's aren't that positive...

Post your commentThe changes at Ronnies are, not to put to fine a point on it, disastrous for home grown jazz. Ronnies was the only week long paid residence that most of the london bands would get. Amazing artists like Ben Castle, Theo Travis, Christine Tobin, etc. etc. would get to play to packed houses, who otherwise wouldn't know that we have such a rich and unique jazz scene here in London. They'd have carried on assuming it was all about americans and Jamie Cullum.
And now? there's a house trio. With guest soloists/singers. What that misses to such a huge degree is that the magic of just about every UK jazz act is in their choice of band. UK jazz isn't about blowing endlessly over bop changes - all the interesting guys are about sound, vibe, 'jazz plus' - most of them came to jazz from somewhere else and so bring a sensibility to it that's informed by listening to prog or new wave, punk or disco... Polar Bear are a band, Ben Castle's band are A BAND, Theo Travis' band are A BAND. It's not front man and accomplished bop noodlers.
So, the front man gets booked, plays lame-assed versions of their tunes with the house trio (who are great players, that's not in dispute), and a bunch of standards and the whole thing has the word CABARET written above it in huge letters, and is read as a massive 'screw you' to all the oh-so-creative musicians playing their hearts out in this country.
It's a genuine travesty.

I have taken refuge in the Jazz Embassy and requested musical asylum. The Embassy has been surrounded by the feared MTV Police. The situation is tense.
