stantracey.jpgA petition's been launched to include Stan Tracey on the next honours list. Not a bad idea, IMHO. Sign up if you're interested. And here's a related thread on the Radio 3 messageboard.

Stan has already been honoured with an OBE. I'm not sure why he needs any further promotion!

I do like his music and his playing, and admire his dedication to the British jazz scene. But I don't think that he's a world class musician. And this country has produced several world class players.

Also, seems to me to be an incredibly grumpy and negative character. "I have no interest in anything any more" as he asserts in his 大象传媒 FOUR biographical documentary is hardly the sort of statement that inspires me.

QUOTE: Sonny Rollins ~ "You do not realise just HOW good this guy is"

Ref: Stan at Ronnies in the mid 60s.

Ian...Stan has earned the right to be grumpy!

I once saw him play a very wet night in Swindon (the Link Swimming Pool and Arts Centre" sic) to an audience that had not seen/understood "jass" since "Its Trad Dad"...and expected the same...

YES, HE WAS GRUMPY! But so were Tony Coe, Tony Oxeley etc. "Christ, what a dump!"

    Try THAT night after night.

    INNIT.

There are some real heroes in this world who have suffered greater hardship than doing a few tough jazz gigs.

Think of Nelson Mandela. You might have thought he had earnt the right to be grumpy. But he isn't. Now there's a real hero.

Stan's already got an OBE, and I'm pleased he received that recognition. But this talk of him being a Lord or a saint etc is all a bit silly really.

Nelson never had to play night after night at Ronnie's with that BAD piano did he?

Grumpy? Grumpy! That is almost the point, and well said BN.
There are very, very few really creative people who aren't grumpy. Nice doesn't cut it.
If I had thought an OBE was a just recognition for the singular determination and achievement of Stan Tracey I would not have started the petition in the first place.
I also feel that Stan represents a whole generation of musicians who are not given the recognition for their achievement in jazz in the sixties and seventies. They changed our sound world, and most of them are no longer with us.

Please understand that I'm playing devil's advocate here. I have great admiration for Stan's achievements which have touched all of us.

I really like Stan's music, but just how great a musician is he? As a yardstick, let's consider that both Miles Davis and John Coltrane were born in the same year. I can't help think Stan's musical contribution appears is pretty limited when stood up alongisde these true giants.

His music is not especially original. It doesn't even stand up well to the comparison to his main influences Monk and Ellington. It isn't even at the highest level within it's own "genre".

Also, I've never once met a jazz musician who has cited Tracey as a major musical influence.

I completely agree that British jazz is under recognised. But isn't it more important to honour British jazz musicians who have contributed more creatively and artistically? Such as Dave Holland, John McLaughlin, Evan Parker, Django Bates or John Taylor?

Ian - I don't see how you can say Stan's achievements can have 'touched all of us' and then go on to accuse him of being unoriginal and simply not very good.

True, there are others who deserve recognition; we certainly need a greater realisation from funding bodies and so on that we do have a jazz scene in this country and it's not just comprised of John Dankworth, Jamie Cullum and Courtney Pine. I don't think anyone would dispute that. But having a go at Stan (devil's advocate or not) seems a bit mean spirited in this context, don't you think?

    Dear Ian,
I thought the point of a peerage was to honour somebody's achievements, irrespective of their temprament. Rather than playing devil's advocate, you would do better by researching Stan Tracey's extensive biography - unrivalled in British jazz history. Judging by the names you have proffered as more artistically creative musicians your own jazz history only extends as far back as 1970. It would be interesting to ask those names whether they consider Mr Tracey as a more worthy recipient. Miles? Coltrane? You are referring to American jazz artists surely? Mandela? Get real mate and start honouring our own!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The honouring of individuals who make significant contributions to culture but are outside the establishment is a very low priority!
I think Stan is one such in jazz. There are many others; Hockney, Bennett, Lovelock are all outside the golden circle, and highly individual. But that is just my view. I'm a jazz nut so Stan is the man for me.
