Prospects for Monday, 8 September, 2008
With prospects for tonight's programme, here's today's output editor, Simon:
Hello All,
So the US Government has finally taken over Fannie and Freddie. The numbers involved in all this are huge. But what does it mean for the US economy? And also therefore for our economy? Is this international capitalism creaking at the seams - are we on the verge of the real crash - or is this the beginning of the end of the credit crunch? And what implications does it have for policy makers here - are the lessons that we should learn and will policy adjust to accommodate it.
Paul Mason is on the case but who should we interview off the back?
The Cabinet go on tour - wasn't this a Monster Raving Looney party manifesto commitment? Today they are in Birmingham and David Grossman has followed them. Could this be a distraction from things going on in Brighton where the TUC are debating public sector pay? Who should we try to speak to live? Should we try and help inter-Labour relations by connecting up Brighton with Birmingham?
And Susan Watts is talking to Professor Higgs - of the theorised Higgs boson particle - about the Large Hadron Collider and whether all this money spent on testing his theory is worth it.
We do have space for another story. What should it be?
All guest ideas, production ideas and story thoughts below please - or bring them to the 10.30 meeting.
See you then
Simon

So, is this really JUST for internal, Newsnight admin use, with viewers (i.e. non-employees who can't go to the 10.30am meeting) able to observe?
If so, fair enough, but it does sometimes seem like New Labour's (substitute any party/group) infamous practice of 'cosmetic consultation' (not that I'm surprised, but there have been SOME issues aired here you might have picked up on, as Barriesingleton has remarked several times now).
Some time back, when the Guardian's Comment Is Free was picked up on the seemingly much higher than expected frequency of Jewish/pro-Israel authoring CiF articles, the response of one of the editors was that this wasn't favoritism, it was just that these authors were more readily available and wrote better pieces.

I've worked in advertising all my life and am well aware of the prices charged by such as Mintel for 'processed' data. Consequently I NEVER answer 'surveys' of any sort. I'm averse to providing them the raw material for free.
Which brings to mind that occasionally a valid suggestion is made here for programme ideas. Should such a suggestion be taken up there might be copyright issues...
I'm only kidding of course. I'm all for a little 'access' and would make no charge. ;-)

I do wonder what a mobile bunker of ministers, staff, security and hangers on will actually hear, let alone pay attention to, but there you are.
Still a great example in these parlous financial and environmentally aware times, and as an exhortation to those that actually earn their pay to cut back and be more efficient it's waaay up there with our masters in the EU decamping betwixt two cities in their 4x4s or private trains just because some in the contingent need to let the chat out or leave a note to the homme du lait.

So don't bother with JadedJean or NewFazer, I am the cost-effective choice for a cash-strapped Beeb. Don't delay, use me today.

The Scottish Broadcasting Commission will
release its report today around lunchtime.
'Is there room for anything else?' Well the outside chance that the world may end on Wednesday seems worth a report from Ms
Susan Watts - and Higgs was/is Scottish?!
As for the Great Brown Hole, I like the idea of linking up the Labour B's in England; but
with all due respect to The Monster Raving Loony Party, the idea of the Cabinet going on tour is actually Scottish as well ...... it is
an idea Labour has borrowed from the SNP.

Poetry!
I heard the Miliban runt 'defending' this
UTTERLY BARMY STUNT and hereby implore Newsnight to debag, tar and feather any government cipher you can get your hands on. This is definitely a gesture too far and a spin too tight. Might you track down just who came up with this idea; who they work for; what they are paid for such brilliance and if they are still 'inpost'?

this again just illustrates how different is

CERN is a wonderful icon for HALF the available science in the area of high energy physics and cosmology.
There is 50+ years of brilliant science – boasting the odd Nobel Laureate – that runs counter to Big Bang, Dark Matter et al.
As the orthodox model stumbles daily, and has to apply ever-more bizarre sticking plaster to its wounds, the Plasma (Electric) Universe with associated, self-consistent physical constructs, goes from strength to strength. Maybe it's time for News Night to commission Migration Watch to make a short film about the impact this will have on this country.
After all,you commissioned three short films about Illegals immigrants two weeks ago, with the end message that we should hold an amnesty for Illegals.
You do have a duty under the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Charter to be a balanced broadcaster, but I am sure you don't need reminding of that !

That must surely be the verdicts so far on the 'airline bombers' who were only joking.
Tell that to the hundreds of travellers world-wide who could have been blown from the sky had our anti-terrorism intelligence been too late; or the millions whose air travels became chaotic and stressful shambles because of the sudden panic of 'no-liquid' carry-ons.
This is a landmark case which seems to demonstrate that trial processes will need some radical revision if they are to deal with conspiracy to murder unknown innocents.

A breakdown of programmes from the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Religion and Ethics dept. has revealed that since 2001, the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has made 41 programmes on Islam, compared with five on Hinduism and one on Sikhism.
But surely both Judaism and Christianity are religions with their roots in the East (Asia), so why are they too played down? This wasn't mentioned, but I noticed it myself.
A spokesmen for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ responding to the Hindu and Sikh complain said the broadcaster was commited to representing all Britain's faiths and communities. "We reject any claims of bias," he said.
I wonder?

Science is about pure enquiry. Scientists are about impure motives such as: fame, beating the other guy, being right (even when wrong) refusing to consider challenging data, hiding errors, fiddling results and, more recently, caving in to funding. Those who know some science, but do not 'know' scientists and the history of scientific failings and deceptions, accept orthodoxy. This is why the man-made (CO2) model for climate change holds such sway. This is why dodgy drugs get to the market. And so on.
Above, on this thread, @9, you can find all you need to throw entirely new light on CERN et al. I emailed Susan Watts, and other ´óÏó´«Ã½ scientific types a while back - no reply. So Newsnight, there it is, a far bigger story than CERN. Are you going to take a look?

Phoenixarisen (#13) Do you think this 'bias' might have something to do with the 'War on Terror' waged against 'Islamo-Fascists' who've been giving Israel (and free-market Liberal Democratic Neocons elsewhere) such a hard time (all their talk of Big and Little Satan, and jihad etc?). Rumour has it that they've been major contributors to 'The Clash of Civilisations' in not embracing usury, debt, female emancipation (spending) and going on jihad. Clearly they're undesirable aliens and not like Westerners at all.
It's odd that Mr Frattini of the EU is encouraging millions more to come into the EU isn't it? On the other hand, perhaps it isn't, as other groups aren't breeding much anymore but maybe that's got something to do with that "jahiliyya" business?
Hindus and Sikhs don't seem to get up to much 'evil-doing' (especially not in the UK), and one mustn't say anything critical about Jews or Israelis as that's deemed anti-Semitic and forbidden by the Race Relations Act.
All in all, the more exposure the ´óÏó´«Ã½ gives to the religion of 'trouble-making', family-orientated, sexist, potential terrorists the better don't you think? We need to guard against its pernicious influence.
