Oscars Newsnight Special: Who gets your vote?

Sarah McDermott | 12:40 UK time, Friday, 20 February 2009

For your delectation, half an hour of pre-Oscar, post-Match of the Day II viewing in an Oscars Newsnight Special on Sunday, 22 February, 2009 at 11.30pm on ´óÏó´«Ã½ 2.

In a special edition of Newsnight Review, Martha and I will be talking to the five directors of the films nominated in this year's best picture category.

So, if you want to know whether Danny Boyle really thinks Slumdog Millionaire is the "feel good movie" of the decade, how David Fincher got Brad Pitt to age backwards in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, how Stephen Daldry responds to the charge that The Reader is "holocaust chic", why Gus Van Sant spent years trying to bring the story of Harvey Milk to the big screen, and how Ron Howard reacted to the real Frost/Nixon interviews when he was playing Richie Cunningham in Happy Days - you'd better watch!

I'll reveal which film I am rooting for on Sunday night. But in the meantime, we want to know which film you think should win the Oscar and why. And while you're at it, tell us who you think deserves to win best actor or actress, best soundtrack, best make-up, and of course which best foreign language film (we're reviewing on Newsnight Review tonight). If you think it's all over-hyped nonsense, I'm sure you'll tell us that too!

You can see a full list of the nominations .

This sort of thing should be best left to the commercial channels.

    GIVE KATE AN OSCAR!

Oh dear, what is the world coming to if behaviour can be taken seriously? Meanwhile a is told to get out of Argentina for expressing , and Israel objects to a past being canonized because he didn't make enough of a statment!

Is it because Easter is approaching? Or is it because of what happened over Xmas in Gaza? Does it matter? Will I be deported forasking?

slumdog winning? I hope not. Ghandi won lots of praise on the backs of paying extras a rupee a day and I hear the same abuse was done on this 'project'.... a curse on all their houses when they rip off the locals...

Going to the flicks is no longer on my radar of little luxuries. I guess there will be many others, who, in years gone by could afford to go maybe once every two weeks along with a restaurant meal, who will by now have long knocked it on the head to shop at Aldi. Iceland with an option to visit the chippy and more *open* to bootleg DVD's from dodgy neighbours.

I guess it will affect Tinsel Towns productions soon.

Of course I'm all ears if Aunty Beeb, Kirsty and Martha wish to take me to the flicks.

    PASS THE ....

Watching Fearne Cotton interview 'celebrities' on SKY tonight, and reading just reinforced my jaded view that this, very like modern politics, paints a rather depressing picture of what passes as our shallow, self-centred, contemporary Liberal-Democratic 'values'.

    Awful stuff.

Sadly, no amount of Newsnight specials can make up for the fact that we do not get to see the Oscars on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ anymore.

But at least that means we don't get to see J Ross presenting them....
