What art would you bin? Tell us here

Verity Murphy | 18:27 UK time, Monday, 25 January 2010

Artist Michael Landy is no stranger to the power of creative destruction, in 2001 his installation Break Down saw him trash all of his possessions.

He's back with a new project called Art Bin.

The idea is that artists and members of the public offer up pieces of art they deem worthless to be dumped in a massive bin at the South London Gallery.

Landy will select which pieces end up in the bin - his "monument to creative failure".

We will be discussing the merit of his plan on tonight's programme. But what do you think? What piece of art that you would like to see in Art Bin?

Let us know.

WHEN THERE IS A BIN FOR BOGUS ARTISTS, TELL HIM I'LL MEET HIM THERE.

And get Gormley and a bunch of others (they know ho they are) to 'drop in' too. Long overdue.

ANYTHING that is described as 'Self Expression'.

Anything where absolutely no technical expertise or talent has been in evidence, e.g.
    - white canvas with a tiny dot
    - Lights going on and off in empty room
    - A single brick

Anything where the artists or reviewers describe those who don't understand as 'philistines'.

Sorry I couldn't be be any more bothered to find out who any of those were by than they could to move themselves to actually DO ANYTHING!

Editors that decide the "Arts" should get ' all too valuable ' time stroke slots in news programmes period.

Does anyone know the Artist of Dirty Old Town played on Newsnight????

What an awful concept - an Art Bin - and a complete waste. I recall last night's so called "failed" piece of art where an artist had made a full stop from polystyrene and considered it her worse piece. She had spent weeks on the full stop. Why throw it away? At the worst, she could at least have auctioned it off for a charity of her choice.

THE COMMA, THE STOP AND (GETTING) THE POINT (#5)

I think you may be somewhat missing the point M76. The point largely was that after several weeks of ‘doing/making’ plus many hours/weeks of thinking about doing, a lump of stuff loosely labelled 'art', was rejected by the artist as NOT making the point. I suppose the question is, what was the point of the point being made in such a pointless way that few would understand the point unless you told them.

At least the artist was not one supposes being paid for their time – thousands and hundreds of thousands of people are engaged in ‘pointless’ jobs and tasks day after day and getting paid very well for it too.

Best stop there before I go ‘off on one’ and get all arty and lose the plot. What would be the point of that............ ?

    AN ARTFUL ANSWER BYT (#6)

My response - as ever - is artless.

I wouldn't put any art in the bin - there is a use for all of it.
