Bahraini security forces have opened fire on anti-government protesters, witnesses and opposition activists say.

The protesters were fired on after they had streamed into the centre of the capital from the funerals of protesters killed in a security crackdown earlier this week.

The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Allan Little in Manama will be giving us the latest on the events and mood there.

Then our correspondent Tim Whewell - who is still in Egypt - will be giving us his assessment of events both there and elsewhere in North Africa and the Middle East.

We have a film from Paul Mason about Portugal's continued economic difficulties, and Mishal will be asking President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso about the continent's economic woes.

And Stephen Smith meets US pop star Usher who is in London with his New Look Foundation. Now in its tenth year, the foundation mentors young people to use their talents to become global corporate and community leaders.Ìý

Do join Mishal Husain for all that and more at 10.30pm on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two.

    GLOBOPOLY FOR DUMMIES

It is as if their leaders have declared war on an imaginary threat and will stop at nothing to 'protect the people'. They will probably bring in open ended detention without trial, and put an incongruous military presence at the airport. Then someone will give a speech about WMD, freedom and small furry animals, and they will invade a helpless country that owns stuff they like.

Britain will be first to recognise the legitimacy of victor.

    barrie #26

All the circumstantial evidence suggests that instead of opting for the FEMA concentration camp option like in the US, the UK has been long planning to go down the Warsaw style ghetto line. Perhaps particularly heavy traffic calming is the groundwork for aforementioned ghetto's, which despite the fact that all alleged environmentalists knew it doubled local traffic pollution, groups like FoE and the Green Party pushed hard for traffic calming. Similarly the the police, who's true reason for pushing traffic calming was probably that it made it easier for them to take back streets taken over by any potential rioters.

Humps in the road are ideal for stopping any vehicle gaining enough speed to break riot police lines, or to smash through and potential future gates. I have noticed that areas likely to be the site of gates like the junction into a major road have mega humps just to make doubly sure. Increased crime rates since the introduction of traffic calming have been used as the pretext to close off back alleys and fit them with high fences and gates. Short cut footpaths are also being closed on the same principle, and as crime rate increases due to the spending cuts perhaps the idea of fully gated communities will floated in order to " protect " the people inside. Of course the opposite is probably true, and with the welfare reforms more unemployed people will be socially engineered into living in certain heavily traffic calmed areas.

Its all a pretty neat little plan really, just what the eco-fascists ordered in order to achieve their aim of reducing the UK population to at most half its current level. No need for concentration camps, just freeze and starve people to death in their ( expensively rented from the corporates ) homes. Disposing of all the dead bodies was practiced during the 2001 FMD epidemic, all the big rendering plants ready to roll at a moments notice. Then there is the possibility of contaminating the water in specific areas for mass killing, this has probably been tested in theory as a friend of mine lost all her tropical fish in less than a hour when she changed the water once, never had any problem with it before.

The thing is that you can't trust anyone in authority anymore, perhaps especially overpaid executives like council officers or even anyone in a suit. One factor that bucks the trend is the government are not going forward with the " forced work for your dole " idea being floated by the Corporate Nazi's. It has to be remembered that the whole object of Nazi WW2 ghetto's and concentration camps were to provide slave labour, the extermination factor was secondary in the first instance just confined to disabled and others not considered fit for productive work. However, the proposed welfare reforms wont work on reducing the number of people unemployed so work for your dole will probably be back on the agenda in future. The proposed welfare reforms do appease the eco-fascist ideology to get rid of the " defectives " and I suspect that many of the moderately disabled and chronically sick will be frozen and starved to death. However, the severely disabled should be OK as it will be highly profitable for the corporates to battery farm them in private care homes.

    GOING INTO COALITION WITH NICK

I think we can swing the AV referendum Nick's way and do ourselves a favour.

If Nick arranges for AV voting slips to have a tick-box for ‘OPT OUT’, this will enfranchise all the voters who currently opt out by staying at home, but who are wickedly vilified as indolent, for their entirely principled stand.

Voters who tick the OPT OUT box, should not tick any other. All opt outs to be counted and announced, as with actual votes.

I am sure Nick will agree with me that this facility will advance the attractiveness of AV in the mind of the electorate, and further convinced he will see that it brings us nearer to full democracy (while edging out Dave).

Nick feels AV will sharpen candidate wits; 'OPT OUT' WILL PUT A ROCKET 'IN THEIR POCKET'!

#74; I don't think your assertion that a "mental health worker" would "know best" is likely to find favour with barriesingleton, given his rants against the NHS.

I'm not sure that "imagination" is what you have more of, frankly; perhaps delusions.

In any event I am a fan of the soviet - with a small "s" and without the Ladybird Book of History baggage - a system whereby assemblies large or small would agree an agenda or manifesto and then elect a delegate - not a representative - who would attend the larger assembly and represent the said agenda or manifesto.

Unlike representative democracy, the delegate has no power to, for example, vote against capital punishment if his assembly resolution supports capital punishment. So the delegate is bound by his own assembly's resolutions; he or she articulates/advocates these.

This soviet delegate role is one which Stalin hated, for it made it nigh on impossible to impose his will across the board; Lenin recognised this hatred and cautioned against Stalin being allowed any office of power, however Stalin suppressed Lenin's wishes after his death, dissolved the soviet assemblies and took power as Party Secretary. The rest is Soviet History.

    A soviet delegate was a part-time job.

Democracy is not simply about elections and is not in great evidence in the approach many of the posters on this site take in their view of the world.

Democracy always has the challenge of whilst working on majority voting also recognizing the minority's position.

I see no sign of that recognition in what you, barriesingleton or that eco being trumpet; and that is concerning; that way fascism lies.Or perhaps more accurately, Stalinism.
