Sarah McDermott | 10:36 UK time, Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary since the UK coalition government came to power.

Tonight, we look at how the relationship between the Conservative and Liberal Democrats is faring and what the strategy is for both parties now, one year on. Plus we'll be joined by some political elders in debate.

Then we have a film from Finland where we've met Timo Soini, the leader of right-wing, anti-immigration, nationalist party the True Finns. Last month the party, which opposes EU bailouts, took nearly a fifth of votes in the country's general election.

And we will be examining the impact of ex-motorsports boss Max Mosley's failed bid in the European Court of Human Rights to force newspapers to warn people before exposing their private lives, and Mr Mosley will be joining us on the programme.

'we'll be joined by some political elders in debate'

Wot, no yoof wing? Wild guesses on a postcard who these 'you're on the guest list' dinosaurs might turn out to be. And how representative of anyone other than the rest of the Westminstattic era as faithfully served by the flat white drinking chatterati they hob nob with, almost to incestuous degrees.

However, one is sure it will all be suitably 'progressive', even if representing not very many. While my experience of 'debate' these days is a lot of folk huffing, puffing and coming up with stuff the chairperson doesn't know or doesn't care enough to correct when rampantly tribal to the point of being essentially worthless.

  • Comment number 3.

... OK, scratch 'progressive' (what constitutes a minority vs. a majority seems to be still wide open, at least once you remove taking actual democratic voting as a measure. Maybe Polly T could be brought back to explain how that works. She seems to add so much at each outing). That seems to be under review.

    BUSH TELEGRAPH? (#1 link2)

Lewis Carroll was rubbish at writing surreal narrative. The CIA's: 'Obama's Adventures in Wakiland' (a land where even Ws are Ps) is far-and-away a better fantasy. I am not even going to START to justify that view.

ALL these 'American' adventures/stunts/cons have the same signature written on the STORYBOARD. It is a high risk game, bringing that visceral thrill to its psychopathic players (the only kind they know). That the seeds of discovery are OVERTLY mixed-in with the primary illusion of A WAR AGAINST EVIL, is the spice of perversity, also dear to their bowels. Our Tony had the same MO. . .

Thanks flicks3 - new to me.

What is the definition of disability exactly. In the land of the Labour socialists Marxist party, having a cough or not having the energy to get out of bed in the afternoon would be qualification for some kinda state funded disability allowance.

THE LAW IS SILENT WHERE POLITICS IS AT ITS MOST EVIL (#3 link)

We all just witnessed the sheer lying hypocrisy of the 'NO' campaign. Then we had to suffer 'two-faces' Dave claiming no culpability and 'Teflon signature' Clegg, after being disgracefully smeared, refusing to censure Dave. THERE IS NO LAW COVERING REFERENDUM LIES.

To believe that a change of governing-party is key to governing success, is to live within the Westminster lie. Were there a rule of law INSIDE WESTMINSTER (other than 'rules' they make to suit themselves) many of their practices would be pronounced criminal. e.g. The representation of The People Act does not permit coercion of voters by UNDUE INFLUENCE - inside Westminster the Whips are freely applied, outside any law. Westminster is an alien place, that attracts an alien species - who rule us.

    Nuff sed.

  • Comment number 12.

Of course the eco-fascists ( perhaps particularly Millband ) in the Labour party want the Con-dems to proceed with deep carbon emission cuts as it will increase the number of people out of a job by the next general election and theoretically increase Labour's chances of being returned with an overall majority. The only problem is that the 2008 Climate Change Act could by then become the dead albatross hung around Milliband's neck, voters voters everywhere but not many for him ?

But in this case scratch the last couple as it probably just means the med... ratings industry. The rest of the country simply gets lumped in, as they are on the other end of the broadcast system and usually know what's best to think. If not vote.

Post-AV, with such roaring approval ratings already, it makes perfect sense for Labour and Mr. Huhne in particular to get into a spat over rather poorly-explained, hard to justify, over-foisted, target-driven concepts such as this.

All ably abetted by the 大象传媒's best 'analysts', with others elsewhere perhaps realising there IS such a thing as too much publicity. To the silent, the spoils?

How very 'Westminster' that that horrible alien mentality just will not acknowledge the truth that is out there, namely: this planet goes hot faster than a menopausal woman - and it goes cold just as rapidly! Carbon-dioxide notwithstanding.

With a lifetime of profitable science under my cranium, when I try to nudge my agricultural soldier MP, towards an unorthodox, yet science-based angle, he tells me HE has no time for ignorant ramblings.

We are all in this together - but some are cosily in it, while others are just - in it.

It would appear that several of my posts containing the term " Corporate Nazi " from the recent past have suddenly been bounced and sent back to me. I can't help speculating that this is entirely due to one particular NN blog poster complaining as part of a personal campaign to silence me, and thus disenfranchise me from the political debate. Perhaps the only people who object to my use of the term Corporate Nazi is because it accurately describes their personal political position, and what has happened to the right to free speech, I have been using the term for several years now with no complaints ?

I found the nutritional answers to all the 'incurable' conditions that (in 70s) my doc and the opthalmist, told me to live with.

In passing: my take on the breast v bottle debate is counter-intuitive. By observation I would say that one of the most frequent indicators for 'behavioural problems' is HIGH CEREBRAL FUNCTIONALITY - the facility to drive one's self mad.

In this AGE OF PERVERSITY where all the needs of the young are stripped away, the higher functionality said to be conferred by breast milk, would mediate for madness.

Well, I鈥檓 on record as calling for radical action, and I鈥檓 glad to say that in Brighton we voted for the only non-conspiring party available and now have a Green MP and Green majority in the town hall. I am ever at a loss to understand why people are carried away by a suit spouting words that are not their own. To me, that is deceit of a high order. I have never done it, and never will. It is as foul as the rescindable signature (Clegg) or the photoshopped image (Cameron). Westminster鈥檚 denizens - far from being honourable - dishonour democracy with every syllable uttered. As for Dave - how better to lose face than to take on another BY CHOICE?

These aspects of politics should be powerfully challenged, by some public service or other, until GUILT IS ACKNOWLEDGED. Anybody know one?

After intermittently watching the coverage of the Energy Bill going through the HoC I can't help speculating that it is little more than the blueprint for a complex investment scam for the benefit of the Banks and big business. If anything the provisions are vague but its clear that it will be of no benefit whatsoever to small business. Unless you are replacing a 25 year old plus boiler it is highly unlikely that anyone is going to recoup their alleged energy cost saving during the period of the proposed loans. It would appear that unless the interest rate is capped at less than 3% any overall financial advantages to the energy consumer are less than clear.

On the bright side the member for Bracknell did point out the glaring omission of any reference to the Severn Barrage, perhaps the only truly viable alternative energy project on the table. The whole bill is a rushed dogs dinner and Tim ( nice but dim ) was bleating how the government should not take any notice of Vince Cable for once talking common sense for the first time in ages. It should appease the eco-fascists sufficiently even if the government do not foolishly follow the 2008 Climate Change Act to the letter. A simple subsidised boiler scrap programme open to any tradesmen would have been far better, it remains to be seen just how many people are prepared to take out the proposed loans.

A JOLLY GREEN BONUS FOR SALMOND'S SCOTLAND? (#30)

Scotland has experience in shipbuilding (and I presume propulsion) oil rigs, hydro, and now tidal and wave power. Spot the common factors.

Nuclear is never going to be anything but a 'time bomb' (a bomb that does its damage over time) - if you are lucky. Danger is inherent. Wind is all very well, but climate would seem to be yielding more extremes in the near future - not amenable to energy extraction. Not until desperation arrives - then too late - will the Waders et al, have to move over for estuary schemes, so tidal stream energy looks like the wise man's choice. Predictable yield - unvarying while the moon stays up. (If it doesn't, electricity will be the last thing on our minds.)

Go for tidal Alex - sell it dear to the dumb southerners.

The piece on Greece was laughable . 'source JP Morgan' on one debt graphic, Ha ! Apart from the usual universal human qualities of delusion and cheating, the heart of the debt crisis - naked short selling of Greek govt bonds and fake rating agencies reports, the use of unregulated naked credit default swaps - the ability from nothing to make unlimited bets on a default so the more the bail-out the more the naked CDS's the more they (banks /hedge funds) will gain from an eventual default . And from where did CDS's come from? yep that's correct - JP Morgan. Its sick; very sick indeed. Couldn't stomach the rest and switched off mid way through 'the Greece piece' I haven't seen any high level politician on MSM questioned about the use of naked Credit Default Swaps. Did they mention CDS's in the rest of it ? I seriously doubt it. This is why Newsnight is going the way of the Raphus cucullatus .

The national experience of the police 'judging' anything, especially on a guilty until proven innocent basis in that odd zone between making money and protecting the public, is not encouraging.

That many of our law makers and law enforcers seem unclear on when a law is broken or not, yet making public ignorance no excuse in making us accountable, seems an odd discrepancy.

Nick used, again, his reference to not standing so close to Dave "that we stand in each other's shadow". An odd choice - most people talk of standing on toes.

I suspect Nick is well aware that Dave's shadow has a heavy black ECLIPSING quality, as opposed to the much greyer, more indistinct Cleggumbra. Fortunately for Nick, shadows (as the NO Campaign made manifest) tend to inhabit the lowlands . . . He should try to rise above.

  • Comment number 51.

@37 Barrie - If you look at the Telegraph article again, it's ten years old, and the case dates back to 1995, so not in Rompuy's reign. About 2/3 of the article is spin and extrapolation. For example, this paragraph is pure hype: "THE European Court of Justice ruled yesterday that the European Union can lawfully suppress political criticism of its institutions and of leading figures, sweeping aside English Common Law and 50 years of European precedents on civil liberties."

Seditious libel is/was an English common law criminal offence. ( ) As far as I can see, this case has nothing to do with English Law, being an unfair dismissal case brought by Mr Connolly against the EU, which he lost. It was a matter of civil law, not even within the jurisdiction of the English courts.

In the light of recent history, it may well be that at least some of Mr Connolly's criticisms of monetary union were justified. But this wasn't a matter of whistleblowing, to which I am very sympathetic. If you actually publish (and profit by) a book criticising your employer, should you really expect to keep your job?

In any case, so far as I have been able to ascertain, Mr Connolly did not take his case to the Human Rights court. However, his subsequent career has flourished; first with Banque AIG and AIG Trading, and now with his own consulting firm.

I agree that the argument of the Spanish advocate, Damaso Ruiz-Jarabo Colomer, was outrageous and even bizarre. But the EU dropped it.

This advocate, now deceased, was born in 1949 and was a product of highly Catholic Falangist Spain. I have always felt that the Roman church is inimical to democratic principles, at home and abroad, and I'm suspicious of its effect on the mindset of some of its adherents. However, as well as being vigilant in defence of our liberties, we have to try to live on good terms with each other, and argue, courteously, for what we believe in.

The EU deserves much criticism, but let it be on the basis of facts. :-)
