Verity Murphy | 15:35 UK time, Monday, 20 February 2012

Our new Political editor Allegra Stratton starts tonight.

On the programme we will have the latest on the eurozone finance ministers' meeting in Brussels aimed at securing a second bailout for Greece.

In a change of plan instead of looking at the appointment of Professor Les Ebdon as head of the Office of Fair Access we have a film on Goldman Sachs and the role it played in helping Greece enter the eurozone.

We look ahead to the Budget in an interview with David Laws, a key figure in the Lib Dems' campaign to pressure their Conservative coalition partners to raise the personal tax allowance.

And we examine the findings of the official investigation into the relaxation of border checks last year and assess the action the government intends to take in response.

Last summer, UK Border Force chief Brodie Clark was suspended - and then resigned saying his position was untenable - after claims he relaxed checks beyond what had been authorised by ministers. In the aftermath Mr Clark told MPs he was "no rogue" and planned a constructive dismissal case.

And we ask what the appointment of Professor Les Ebdon as head of the Office of Fair Access - the body set up by the government to ensure all students have a fair chance of getting a place at university - will mean for students and further education.

    +
Will mean that there is no such thing as fair access if you're an English student trying to access a British University as your parents are subsidising Scots and others to get their higher education free and immigrant students are subsidised with NHS, welfare, housing & jobs to make it harder for British students to find a job after racking up £40-£50 K in debt.

Its all outrageous and Professor Ebdon - institutionalised leftie, globalist & the rest?

water shortage and water profits. are they related?

funny how the market never solves anything just ends up in failure that the taxpayer has to pay up for? banks, energy, rail, water....

what really happens at those cermonial dinners? A resigning event?

HEALTH SHORTAGE (SICKNESS) AND 'HEALTH' PROFITS - ARE THEY RELATED? (#2)

To culturally mediated PHYSICAL ILLS, we have steadily added MENTAL ILLS, some elevated to cultural status, even as we acquire the understanding to KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE DOING TO OURSELVES. In short, we are going mad by espousing a CULTURE OF MADNESS and, with Victorian aplomb, bombing it into the world of Johnnie Foreigner.

Britain is still a MAJOR EXPORTER!

THIS IS THE AGE OF PERVERSITY - BRITAIN LEADS THE WORLD.

"...David Laws, a key figure in the Lib Dems' campaign to......"

You mean the ex- minister who was forced to resign in disgrace? Has the ´óÏó´«Ã½ been co-opted into a campaign of political rehabilitation?

    /news/uk-politics-13347619

Allegedly, he did not "intend to profit" by all this. But his election campaign in Yeovil focussed heavily on his alleged "clean bill of health" regarding expenses.

It's a pity he wasn't as brave and honest as, say, Chris Smith. It's not just Laws of course - this isn't about homophobia, but rather SECOND home-ophobia!

Wow!...this piece by Dr. Paul Craig Roberts holds no punches. Awesome!

You have to remember that Dr. Paul Craig Roberts was a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy and associate editor of the Wall Street Journal. He is no loose cannon blogger.

But in the Age of Fairness, going forward (so to speak) when will someone arrange a march for Heterosexual Pride? Are we being discriminated against?

    TACIT CONFIRMATION

I heard, yesterday, that Tacitus said: "The more corrupt the state, the more it legislates."

    Nuff sed

PS I quoted '´óÏó´«Ã½ friendly' Clarkson @ post 7, but applied to MPs.

    DEAR NEWSYNIGHTY

During the switchover period, should you be applying barely-audible, incongruous musack to purported news? Messing with the image is OK - as long as it is SO crass, no mistune could possible yield such banality. (Tonight was OK.)

IN THE LIGHT OF GLOBAL CORRUPTION

Why discuss who knew who was corrupt and when? Surely we all know that 'they' are ALL corrupt - all of the time?

Paradoxically The Sunday Politics featured kids of five being inducted into philosophical REASONING (the 4th R). But what will 'they' do when the kids demand to be taken out of the INSTITUTIONALISING ENVIRONMENT OF SCHOOL?

Tony trumpeted "Education X 3" but we can now see it was "INSTITUTIONALISATION X 10". It has delivered an effete mass into the hands of the COVERT TYRANNY that is Westminster.

They have come to love Big Brother . . .

Newsnight..are you feeling alright? I have to ask because your treatment on the Greek thing was kinda more real and probing than your previous reports on that European basket case place. Ok, you scratched the surface but its a start...well done newsnighty people!

The new woman you got there. She seems competent, worked for one of those annoying sanctimonious newspapers so she said. As long as it wasn't the Guardian, give her a months trial..we'll see how she goes.
Who is she replacing by the way?.. Michael Crank?

    "CONSERVATIVE SUPPORT SHRINKS" (#8 link)

Of course. Disaster Dave took to himself the mantle of Conservatism before the election, and his ARROGANCE knows no bounds. Dave is all. In consequence Conservatism is coming over as Dave - nuff sed.

When it gets really bad, we shall have Nick and Dave each plotting the pre-5 year downfall of the other. Dave will be in a panic, but with that little boy insistance he is right, and everyone should listen, while Nick will be in a panic that he will be dethroned, and terrified of how silly he will look with no followers.

    CANARD

Ad nauseam, the over-elevated ciphers trot out their uninspected mantra that 'democracy' - our style - is the best system of governance. Today it was the turn of Alistair Darling on the Today programme.

Until they realise (and admit to self and state) that PARTY BASED 'DEMOCRACY' aka D MOCK CRASS Y, has degraded to COVERT DESPOTISM, we shall remain LIVING WITHIN THE LIE; no basis for achieving anything.

    And big Newsynightie welcome.

One is sure, given her experience and background, she will bring a unique new perspective to political stories.

If not much change to that world famous context the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is so noted for.

But looking at the coverage of the Heartland case, at least the 'watertight oversight' thing still seems to apply as and when needed.

Have to say, they 'comments are closed' thing is catching..

Odd that certain Gleick-club publications, such as the Graun, were open and baying when things seem much more... 'suitable'. One is sure certain broadcasters were much more cautious.. no?

Speaking of which, congrats to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ for ensuring, using its expertise and sources, that this story was 'reported' with all aspects germane being covered...

No? Maybe that explains why Newsniffer is having a field day with all the ´óÏó´«Ã½ 'evolutions of the story'.

Anyway, give the girl a chance, eh?

It's not like it matters if political matters are 'analysed' more for heat than light, and more often than not to shape a certain political direction.

You don't get to be genetically impartial and most trusted for nothing. Apparently.

I live in a small town in Kent, average yearly rainfall, 24inches or 60cm in new money. This has been measured for over a century. Oh and it was also the hotest place in England, so good evaporation happening.

Population 50 years ago around 10 and half thousand, it's now almost 20 thousand, rainfall is still 24inches/60cm. So who's bright idea was it to build all those new houses, in a drought area, concreting over land that acted as aquifers, the most common way of water supplies around here. Oh there's some bright sparks in planning.

But with a country full to bursting just where is everyone going to live and get their natural resources from.

MIGHT SAINT CAMPBELL AND LORD PREZZA EXPECT SIR PAXO ALONG SOON?

Advancing age does terrible things to integrity, even negative integrity, among those who catch a whiff of patronage. Even if, as in Alastair Campbell's case, it is only ´óÏó´«Ã½ patronage (so far). Jeremy is sooo transparent, even 76 might notice. Nah!

In the English language 'culture' and 'corruption' are now SYNONYMOUS. OED panel: take note!

    March budget 2012
VAT cut for recovery can be funded by cutting susbsidies to foreigners eg jobs, NHS, housing, welfare, pensions etec etc.
    Its called 'basic maths'
Does any reasonably sane person NOT think the UK is now in a national, overall, economic recession/depression/slump?
Is it me or do we need a programme to discuss 'reasonable sanity'?
    BB-crats still freelancing?
FGM - still rife in UK?
Big companies hiring subsidised immigrants raher than British workers - perhaps Osborne can give big UK companies a bigger tax break in Mrach budget - or would that be reasonably sane or insane?

TO THEM IT IS A GAME - WE ARE PAWNS (#23)

Some might query my use of 'Them' but - as some irate school-master would roar, after a misdemeanour - THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE.

'They' are those who connive at rendition, deport Chagossians, rig elections (yes, in UK) routinely lie and cheat for gain, degrade indigenes and JF alike - one with corruption, the other with war, and fight ritual battles in Westminster - calling it 'democracy' - WHILE CALLING THEMSELVES "HONOURABLE".

So much talk of fairness, payment by results, and of: 'no reward for failure'. Let a NewsyNighty guru chart Westminster initiatives over the last five PMs; HOW MANY WERE RESOUNDING SUCCESSES? HOW MANY PMs AND MINISTERS WERE EVER RUINED BY FAILURE?

If I had been so inept, my business would have foundered.

WATER WORKS? OH NO IT DOESN'T! PANTO SEASON AGAIN (#20)

  • Comment number 26.

I don't understand why Greece is so adamant on staying in the eurozone. 1) The austerity plan has done nothing but accelerate the deterioration of the country's public finance over the past year; Greece's national debt level has ballooned to 160% of GDP, while the economy contracted by 7% in the fourth quarter of 2011 and unemployment rate is now standing at 20%, not to mention the countless protests and street riots that are doing so much damage to the country's social stability. 2) All austerity does is cutting deficits, yet we all know one cannot pay down debts by simply borrowing less. To shrink the national debt level, Greece would have to stop borrowing (run a budget surplus), and has money left over to meet any debt payments that fall due. Without it, the country would have to come back for another bailout every time it has trouble rolling over existing debts.

I suspect the policy makers inside the EU are already aware that Greece will have to default eventually – perhaps the bailout plans are really designed to buy them enough time so that they can put firewalls in place and save the other peripheral countries like Portugal, Spain and Italy from going down with Greece when the inevitable occurs.

You mean the ex- minister who was forced to resign in disgrace? Has the ´óÏó´«Ã½ been co-opted into a campaign of political rehabilitation?

We all make mistakes. David Laws did the honourable thing by taking responsibility for his action and resigning his post. Some ministers don't do that and let others carry the can. I say give the man another chance. I have watched his interviews on TV before, he always makes a lot of sense on economics and public policy.

    KNOWING THE FAUX (#26)

With respect mademoiselle_h, I don't think you can begin to imagine the degrees of Machiavellian deception that now manifest across the world. Greece is the tip of a financial iceberg floating in a sea of human folly. I have no idea what 'they' are up to, but I know, without doubt, it does not stand up to scrutiny in terms of every-day decency and reason.

Keiser is still out there folks: Report 252 7mins in.

I have no idea who is telling the truth.

  • Comment number 28.

Greece has to try & stay in EZ & keep the Euro as a refloated Drachma would probably be worth less than Wiemar notes and Greece would become a real 3rd world country & would be a EU catastrophe with e.g.:
Pensions would not be paid - public sector would not be paid etc
    Doesn't need any gory descriptions.
EU has a responsibility to Greece as a EZ member.
EZ countries need to pay heavily for Greece - there is no alternative.

NOT SEEN MAASTRICHT MAJOR INTERVIEWED ON THIS ONE (#28)

My heart sank when he signed us away without a mandate; perhaps he might defend where we have got to now - oh yes.

Imagine Underpants John trying to sell the idea of signing up to Maastricht, to the Dragon’s Den! It was the ultimate chocolate teapot; one with no lid and no spout! Why do we elevate these needy ciphers?
