The government's health regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), today said that patients who have undergone large head metal-on-metal hip replacements should be monitored annually for life amid concerns they cause serious health problems.

Tonight, we have the results of a joint investigation with the British Medical Journal detailing how problems with such devices have been long known, but no action taken to block their use and patients kept in the dark.

Professor Sir Kent Woods, chief executive of the MHRA will be joining Jeremy Paxman in the studio to discuss.

Also on the programme, Barclays Bank has been ordered by the Treasury to pay half-a-billion pounds in tax which it had tried to avoid.

Barclays are said to be surprised and embarrassed by the move to close the two schemes, which the bank says were in line with those used by other banks.

Joe Lynam looks at the nuts and bolts of the schemes that the Treasury described as "aggressive tax avoidance" and asks if this is a real change in approach to tax avoidance.

As Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum go head to head in the crucial Republican party primary votes in Arizona and Michigan, we have an interview with former candidate Herman Cain.

Liz MacKean has been in Newcastle with Ken McMeikan, chief executive of Greggs, meeting people who have been taking part in work experience at the bakers.

And Allegra Stratton has new information on the Budget negotiations happening inside Cabinet.

    THIS'LL MAKE YOU LAUGH

I gather the National Joint Register (contrary to the impression given by meeja) ONLY has a record of your joint, if the 'necessary signature' on the correct form was given (asked for?) at the time of the implantation.

    Lansley of hope and glory.

Talking of lack of surprise and no embarrassment..

Wot, no #Occupy post mortem? There's one man's life's work in ruins.

Meanwhile, in areas of fiscal jiggery-pokery the nation need not be troubled with quite so much...

One man's creative tax compliance interpretation is another's...

Wot about the tax dodging 'journalists' at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ who were exempted from Gordon's IR35 legislation?

Can we have some disinfecting light on this sharp practice please?

There are larger gaps between rich and poor than for many years. However, the requirement for morality should be equalised but perhaps if the morality was equal perhaps the wealth gap wouldn't be so great. If there is no agreement about morality what does the country stand for apart from the three card trick?

I doubt it is just hips.

A friend of mine's Mother had a knee joint replaced and it snapped. At first the surgeons could not believe there was a problem so soon after the joint was fitted - but because it caused an infection they could not operate again for several months until the infection had healed - so my friend's Mother was left with a great deal of pain and discomfort for many months.

When the broken joint was removed the surgeon apparently stated that he had never seen anything like it before.

So it could well not be hip joints but also knee joints as well.

Hey muse, the week that IR35 was due to come in I had a phone call from a ´óÏó´«Ã½ business presenter journo who was very worried about how IR35 would affect him. He was going to run an item about it on his programme and wanted me to fill him in on all the IR35 implications.

With 48 hours journos were exempted from IR35 and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ presenter journo never did an item on IR35 - wonder why.

IMPO IR35 did enormous damage to the UK IT and Engineering fields - we went from being very much in demand and hence, due to high skills, earning a lot of revenue for this country. It should be remembered that after IR35 came in the country made far less in taxes from IT workers and Engineers than pre-IR35.

So the country lost money and the country lost one of the best skilled workforces in the World's leading skill areas.

Why was this allowed to happen? Who, if anyone, benefitted?

I found that the implant article was very one sided all against Du Pay What about company's like Zimmer what about poor installation surgeons that have fitted the implant incorrect. We have had warnings about metal on metal implant from as early as 2002 we have had implant withdraw to have a small modification then back on the markets. Doctors and surgeons have know about the problems of metal on metal implant and resurfacing and have been paid to use products from company's like Du Pay and Zimmer. If we are going to have an exposé let do it right.

    Bullying from the evil empire:

On the other hand, what kind of organisation did he think he was working for?

The serious issue is that it makes a mockery of equality before the law. In court, a defeat for Newscorp would mean a pinprick in its finances, but a victory would mean bankruptcy for the journalist.

Of course, Mr Romney seems to think that "Corporations are People". If so, then they are the kind one wouldn't want to meet on a dark night!

I mean its not like you had anything to work with - only a ´óÏó´«Ã½ reporter observing the police being allowed into St Pauls upper balcony and given express permission to remove protesters from St Pauls steps, according to the live stream being beamed all over the internet last night...

COVERT CORRUPTION BUILT INTO UK CULTURE - NOW BECOMING VISIBLE

The approval of implants has an 'AAA' feel about it - corruption. Drugs were trumpeted as (by comparison) properly tested - you can NOT be serious man; drug testing is like IPCC rigour on CO2-based warming - corruption! Then Fraser Nelson popped up on PM to tell us UK is not corrupt, neither is the media! Corruption?

    Workfarce;

Interview a couple of spotty bespeckled tie wearing uni graduates who say the sanction threat scheme worked for them. bearing in mind one of 'em said he was only doing it for the experience and all the company get is his work while on the scheme. no expectation of a job offer or pay then. The other interviewee (clone of the first) got a job out of it. But why didn't you interview someone who this scheme is a real threat to. Not a hood or a trainer in sight. this scheme isn't aimed at sanctioning the aspiring middle class looking youngsters. No its aimed at the cast of Shameless and the Jeremy Kyle green room. Cause we've been led to belive that thats where all your income tax goes soon as you've paid it. And they squander all the 67 thousand a week they all get in handouts on booze and drugs. And we just want to let them know how much we resent then for it.

    So there we have,

The use of IR35 is nothing short of serious fraud & corruption.
UK based employers are using to employ foreign workers to get staff of the payroll account & as everyone's tax affiars are private and data protected - most employers know that very little tax is paid by those self employed on this basis either in the UK or in country of origin.

It is a national disgrace - supported by UK companies, CBI, political class, banks, main professions etc.

    The losers are:

    1) the low & average paid PAYE tax payer as getting whipped by the tax man as picking up the tab

    2) British workers as jobs being sold overseas, undercut by wages & tax avoidance/evasion & having less & less job opportunity.

This needs urgent address in March 2012 national budgetary amendments as is a total scandal.

    'The government's health regulator'

As I posted on my Twitter feed today (it's OK, not being followed by any at the ´óÏó´«Ã½, so will not make the 'news'), 'Mum, I saw this.. and thought of you. Then I got very, very angry'

All that has gone down, is going down, and set to go downhill further, and the big effort is to stop the latest 'ism of calling vulnerable elders 'Dearie'... without permission????!?

I don't need another over-paid, non-effective regulator to tell me that governance in this country is in poor health now, if not terminal.

I wonder how challenging other MSM 'PR to news' clones addressed this..

    /news/health-17195679

OK, par for a very sorry course.

Don't get old. I don't feel it.. yet. So I am not patronised by a public 'service' sector that has lost all plots. But I am something a lot worse. The trick will be to direct it properly, and will do the most good.

It is ciminal that these hip joints have been launched onto the market without any robust clinical trials. In efect these poor people that have been affected with these hip joints have been used as guinea pigs.

I too have a medical device called a transvaginal tape to cure stress urinary incontinence implanted in me. This too has gone distaterously wrong and has eroded my pelvic organs. This too was launched onto the market without any clinical trials. Hundreds if not thousands of ladies have been affected and the MHRA are choosing to ignore our plight

There are vey few surgeons willing to treat us as this is a permanent implant and removing it is like extracting chewing gum from hair.

This implant has ruined my quality of life. I am in constant pain and have lost my job. I face a life of further surgeries to remove this tape bit by bit as it erodes Please someone help us

Well, no 'reporting', especially from what passes for 'journalists' these days, is to be expected. Did #Occupy not issue a press release for re-intoning, with gravitas?

But lack of analysis? Whatsoever? I am shocked, I tell you.. shocked! Laurie Penny otherwise engaged at this key juncture?

As to musicals, heck, why not? If they can be spun from the murder of a disabled old man, the vistas of opportunity are wide open. Maybe get the geezer who rewrote The Cruel Sea to pen the libretto the way the author would have intended 'we' need to hear it, with 'appropriate' social commentary, apparently, and bingo... result!

    D MOCK CRASS Y (#23)

Hi Ann. I am currently trying to beat the system for a friend (77) who has years of post hip-replacement swelling and pain (she also has the tape you refer to). As I never cease to point up, on this blog, COVERT TYRANNY rules over a matrix of corruption, but our politicians trumpet it as: "democracy under the rule of law".

One of the most devious tricks ever pulled here, was to spread the myth that we Britons complain about everything. The TRUTH is that every aspect of life under the Westminster Tyranny IS RIPE FOR JUSTIFIABLE COMPLAINT.

Might the worm be turning? (see Junkk above) I shall continue my actions until mental failure (or a freak accident) claims me.

ALL THAT IS REQUIRED FOR EVIL TO ENDURE IN TRIUMPH IS THAT GOOD MEN DO NOTHING

Who believes the patient . April 2006 - Birmingham Hip replacement - Ten months of repeatedly saying the new - hip joint was more painful than my damaged hip -- eventually one person believed me and it was realised the new - joint could never have worked -- cup size etc., Told at the time l was only the second person that this had been noted and before my new joint was a year old had an Exeter replacement . My left foot is still numb from the original operation (never believed by consultant) and the leg has very restricted movement.

Further to my earlier comments ; I still feel anger by medical responses and feel humiliated in the fact that after, daring , to legally take on the medical profession the fact that Birmingham hip replacements are no longer used on females was not taken into account when my case was vaguely considered . I was told that my long standing back problem was probably the cause of extended pain and numbness after operations for my hip. Made to feel very guilty for daring to cross the medical profession l felt hounded into a very low out of court settlement and in one letter from the consultant words to the effect ----- " I an sorry" My main question has always been --- HOW COULD THE SURGEON PERFORM A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION IF THE IMPLANT WAS NOT CORRECT ? No answer given to me only evidence that women are no longer given this particular implant.

These NHS doctors - some of them are so arrogant also - no matter what they do to you or whatever goes wrong they can be so arrogant.

Speaking of someone who has accompanied those having problems at e.g hospital - they're so much hidden behind NHS shield that they're unnaccountable and untouchable.

A much better patients response system is needed - preferably a fast track Tribunal system is needed to deal with those having problems & concerns - as applying to GP services also.

Raising issues through the same NHS staff that have caused the problems for some - is completely unacceptable. Should apply to care homes also?
