Truth matters

Post categories:

William Crawley | 15:29 UK time, Friday, 5 January 2007

I've just recorded an interview with Jeremy Stangroom, co-author with Ophelia Benson of . We were planning to broadcast the interview this Sunday, but it'll probably be the following, since a debate about capital punishment, Andy McIntosh responding to his critics and an hour-long interview with Lord Eames will take up most of that programme. Jeremy deals with various challenges to truth in the interview, including "postmodernism". One difficulty this kind of interview presents for broadcasting is that it is pretty heady stuff. Terms like "epistemology" and "truth" in close proximity ... could be an interesting edit. I am fully committed to challenging radio, though; and I'm lucky to work for a station that encourages intelligent speech. So we'll see how that all comes out in the wash.

They have to grab it where they can find it. For the other 99% of the time they have to fill up, they have no choice but to settle for whatever else comes along.

Totally agree with you re R Ulster and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ in general.
It would be interesting to hear from our ex-colonial cousins re the media across the pond - we possibily have a distorted view that it is total rubbish?

Here's from the ex-colonials across the pond. Media in America rubbish? Which of the myriad of channels all of us with cable TV or satellite TV get are rubbish? The ones which rebroadcast Britain's exports like Are You Being Served? Keeping up Appearances (one of my favorites) and some of my all time favorites like Rumpole of the Bailey (Thames TV), Upstairs Downstairs, and the Forsythe Saga? The channels which broadcast old movies like AMC and TMC? Nature channels like Discovery, National Geographic, and Animal Planet? Maybe the Sci Fi channel which broadcasts among other things Dr. Who? I know given the mainstream view of Britan's politics most of you probably wouldn't like most of our news channels like CNN, FOX News, or MSMBC but what about a channel dedicated just to weather, what about the ´óÏó´«Ã½ which has its own cable channel here (at an extra fee?) (´óÏó´«Ã½ world news is rebroadcast to me here over 2 different PBS channels every night) How about all of those channels which rebroadcast old dramas, sitcoms, and other old prime time tv shows tons of them most of which those of you who've never lived in the US probably never heard of. Or the History Channel. There are several cartoon channels for children like Nickelodeon and the Cartoon channel not to mention PBS channels (I get 3), two government and public affairs channels CSPAN and CSPAN-2 which broadcast among other things live coverage of Congress and rebroadcasts of Prime Minister's Question Time (when I'm not watching the Comedy Channel (C-Span 2 also is Book TV which allows authors to talk about their books to live audiences and is among my favorites) a cooking channel (there are always at least several cooking shows running simultaneously on other channels too)a travel channel, a couple of religious channels, several channels about fixing up houses, a couple of channels about automobiles including repairing them, modifying them and collector car auctions, several shopping channels including HSN (home shopping network) QVC, and Shop NBC. There are several channels in Spanish, one in Korean, periodic rebroadcasts of programs in French, Polish, Greek, and Korean. Half a dozen or more channels just dedicated to sports, at least one exclusively to business and finance (CNBC), several music channels such as MTV, Arts and Entertainment, E, Bravo, and then there are the free over the air broadcast networks incuding 4 national networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX as well as several locals. There are several well know local channels we get to incuding one from Chicago and another from Atlanta. I'm sure I left some out. And by the way, most of them are 24 x 7. I get a mere 80 or so of them in my house but some people probably get about 200 and it may not be much longer with fiber being run directly into people's houses that we get up to about 500 or more. If you don't have a TV guide or watch the TV guide channel, by the time you flip through all of them, the first of them is over already. All this and high speed internet from the same provider costs me about $100 a month and it is NOT usage sensitive (I've got around a dozen TV sets, about 10 or 15 vcrs and around half a dozen dvd players in my house, it's a very big house.) TV sets run the gamut in price, you can pay any price you want. You can buy a 62" flat screen plasma TV for around $4000 down to a 20" CRT flat screen color tv I saw in the supermarket a couple of weeks ago for around $70 and I saw a black and white portable in a drug store for around $25. If you don't insist on new, you can probably find used sets that still work perfectly well for free. America is truely a throw away society, few people get most things fixed when they break anymore.

Here's a link to my cable provider. It is very typical of what is available all over the US. Now how can all of the available channels be rubbish?

Now what do you get in Britain?

I'm always nasty to everyone. Haven't you figured that out yet? Why do you ask, have I been particularly nasty to him lately? How? Tell me so I can do it some more :>)

BTW, you don't want to be around me when I am really trying to be nasty. Ever hear of Hiroshima?

Just a quick post with a link which will give you a good idea of our tv (digital) and radio - at the botom of page you'll se links for various EPG's - Sky Satellite, cable and Freeview digital terrestrial.
Many will be familiar to you.
Sky is the only one broadcasting a few HD channels at the moment.
No satellite radio here.

Our analogue tv system is to be turned off by 2012 - just 5 channels on it ´óÏó´«Ã½1, ´óÏó´«Ã½2 and 3 commercial channels.
Plus in N Ireland some of us can get 4 channels from Dublin
The 2006/2007 colour TV licence costs £10.96 per month - about 36p per day for each household. It is free if you are over 75, half-price if you are registered blind.

The annual cost TV licence (set by the Government) is currently £131.50. A black and white TV licence is £44. There is no radio licence.
All of this goes to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ for TV, radio and internet services. Must have one just to use a TV whether you watch ´óÏó´«Ã½ or not.

I'm still hoping to hear the truth about what's on offer in the UK on television. Is it true you still use aerials for reception in some homes? Is it true you have to pay a license fee for every tv set? How about VCRs since they have their own built in tuners? What do things cost?

thanks for the link
While the details are different, as I see it at a first glance, the bottom line is that it seems to me on the whole that it's about the same as what I get. So how do you like your rubbish :>) There sure is a lot of ´óÏó´«Ã½ though. That's what happens when a government sanctioned quasi monopoly has so much power and money...and so little accountability. They can put on whatever they want.....even this :>)

Which Channel?
When?

This would be useful information to have .....

Oh, and if truth matters, why do we have "Thought for the Day" and other lying religious blackmailers on the ´óÏó´«Ã½?
