On Jonnie's birthday

Eddie Mair | 10:09 UK time, Friday, 9 February 2007

we recall yesterday's white hell.

Norman Leach says: "Snow brings Chaos to road, rail, sea and air..but at Charlton Lido, South East London, it takes a bit more than snow to deter the intrepid members of the swimming club from their morning swim!

Gillian in Staffordshire sends this:

Toby sends this: "The photo taken from my bedroom window in Oxford first thing this morning (for a student that being about 9.30)."

And Fifi says: "The view is from my office window, where I'm sitting now typing this. You can't see the airbase today because of the drizzly snowdust still falling. But usually it's quite busy with jumping craft and whatnot. Can't possibly tell you where it is though. Although it's in plain view (when not obscured by snow) and clearly signposted, I expect it counts as A Secret."

And howsabout this? "We heard you had a few snowflakes down South today...take a look at some real snow from Moray (that is NE Scotland) this morning. Best wishes, Rob ps And of course we got back safely!"

What stunning pictures, particularly the last. I want to go there now!

And, of course, a Very Happy Birthday to Jonnie, the best friend a frogger can have.

Well Thank you Eddie and all the other lovely Froggers for their warm sentiments.

My Mother reminded me that I actually popped out at 9-30 PM on this day in 1960 so I'm really still 46.

The excellent Jonnie has opened Fido's Corner on the PMBlogspot. The link is as follows:

Anyone who commented re dogs/canine friends recently should find their postings on there. If you love dogs, you'll enjoy - but have a hanky handy!

Jonnie is also hoping to post up photos of froggers' canine friends and I suggest you email them to him from the details on his website (click on any Jonnie entry to hyperlink) (That all sounds a bit rude, but it isn't meant to be, Jonnie!)

Strangely we have no snow in Bournemouth, in fact yesterday was just gorgeous. Brilliant sunshine all day if a little nippy. Daffodils are beginning to flower and although it is drizzling today, we still have no snow forcast. Poor darlings. I feel so sorry for you all. The reason I moved from Yorkshire to Bournemouth was to escape the dreaded white stuff. We even had snow in May one year I remember.

Wonderful photos, but you do exaggerate Eddie...'white hell' indeed.

Trouble is that some parts of the country don't get this sort of weather often enough to practice coping, and even less now with climate change.

Having said that, the forecasters got it right, the gritters were out, everyone planned how to cope and the kids (and others) had a great time.

'hell' indeed - exits muttering about Scottish childhood and real snaw.......

I should make it clear that all I did was post up BigSister Fido document.

BigSister compiled and collated everything - which must have taken her forever! (In between e-mailing Paddy, of,course) :-)

    Eddie,

The most argumentative man I ever met was called Mischa. He disapproved of almost everything and everyone, and had even developed a special sound to express his contempt, something like Eeurgh.

He was quite literally disagreeable, in that he would never let you agree with him.

Once, in the middle of what had turned out, inexplicably, to be an acrimonious discussion, I said to him, "Mischa, why are we arguing? I wholeheartedly agree with you". "Eeurgh," he replied, "it's not a question of agreement".

Simon - what are you doing posting? Go and finish decorating Jonnie's birthday cake -immediately!

Room 502 eh? to re-post or not to re-post?

Last time. It's beginning to lose its spontaneity. Well it certainly won't look spontaneous if it goes through 4 times.....

Oh dear.... I just wanted to post a single line to say "Happy birthday Jonnie - have a lovely day" I was told I couldn't due to attempts to curbing malicious content blah, blah, blah....

I only ventured back yesterday after a few days away - I may have to go and have another lie down.

    Anyway lovely piccies everyone x

Many happy returns Jonnie ... and welcome Simon, frogging at last! Luckily none of us has any secrets...

Just back from a long day in snowy Northampton. Rapidly becoming slushy Northampton.

I have noticed, though, that drivers in this part of the country are surprisingly sensible in snow and ice. They're aggressive tailgaters at all other times but in wintry weather they leave huge braking distances and do slow down.

Norman Leach: I once got into a lift with a shivering magazine editor after lunch, one snowy February lunchtime. His hair was wet but he looked really happy. I asked him what he'd been up to.

    "Swimming in Peterborough Lido."

In his defence he is a Geordie.

Sorry I missed your birthday yesterday, jonnie. I don't know where the day went to! Hope you had a really lovely day, and what better present for your birthday than for Simon to finally join the Frog fraternity? Welcome Simon. (Sorry if you've been here before & I've missed it) It becomes strangely addictive, you will find!

We've no snow in Manchester either. Not that I'm sorry, as tomorrow involves a very stressful day with morning rehearsal (world's most keen-eared conductor - brilliant but scary), then a wedding ceremony & reception 30 miles away, then back to the concert hall for the concert at 7 30. And just to top it off, recorded for later broadcast. So no pressure then... What we DON'T need is snow as well.
