Another item fell off

Eddie Mair | 11:45 UK time, Thursday, 29 March 2007

the programme last night, thanks to Breaking News and that sort of thing. We trailed it. It would have sounded like this:

"What are the best ways of avoiding a parking ticket? Well - not parking illegally is probably number one on the list. But if you find your back wheels WERE on double lines, what then? I've been hearing from Simeon Ademolake who has first hand experience of how to beat the traffic wardens":

Here it is.

So far today, Eddie, I've done all right. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, or grumpy, nasty or self-centered. I'm really glad about that. But in a few minutes, Eddie, I'm going to get out of bed, and then I'm going to need a lot of help.

    Thank You.

Is this the start of a campaign to to pinch an extra five minutes from The News?

As I can't get my Realplayer to play clips off t'Internet anymore, and can't get my Dad to come round and fix it for a while, could anyone give me the gist of the answer found in the above clip please? Not that I'm expecting to need it, you understand: Curiousity has merely overcome me once again...

The Parking Warden hadn't written the ticket so the guy just drove off. He got a ticket later in the post. He appealed it and won!

Ed (9), Thanks -- I already have windows media player but I don't know how to change settings so that it's my default player for clips from the blog. Would they play if I did?

Appy, in firefox (I know no other), go to tools/options and near the bottom you can change the default action for various filetypes (as indicated by .ram (real), .mp3 (windows), etc.

Even so, with my great expertise, my firefox seems to want to play mp3 through itunes....Grrr!

When you are in the options list, make sure each file extension is only listed once. I found mp3 in there four times, and only the earliest one was to iplayer, the rest to windows media player. I changed the remaining one to wmplayer and it works now.

I kind of thought you might say that Ed, but, um, I'm scared! What if I replace IE with Firefox and somehow break my PC or laptop or find out I'm incompatible with something I need to be compatible with or even (shudder) break the Internet???

But thank you for the link and I'll dwell on it for a bit.

Firefox will almost automatically import all your bookmarks (sorry - favourites), etc. but it won't in any way disable your continued use of IE, should you wish to. It will ask you if you want it as default browser, and if you say yes, it will load up whenever you go to a web link or call up thwe internet. If you subsequently open IE, it will ask you if you want it as default, and you can answer yes or no. I.E. you can use whichever you wish whenever you wish.

It won't break your computer unless it's rather elderly and has relatively little memory.

I say it's worth a try, but I'm politically and morally biased against Mr Gates and have been so for decades. If you have any problems, I'll do my best to help you, and you can find my email at the refuge.

Ap - Ed I's advice above is spot on.

I downloaded and used Firefox at the time the Blog turned "blue". It sits beside IE and I can choose which I want to use. As far as I can see it has not had any effect on any other program including IE. I found it remarkably similar to IE and very easy to use.

Ed, are you by any chance in cahoots with Mozilla? Shameless plugging!

Only joking, as I'm a maccy and use Firefox myself. Am also a microsoft avoider. But I've got ie in my bookmark title bar thingie.

I'm a bit of a failure as a microsoft avoider, having succumbed to windows some time ago and never getting round to converting to linux due to anxiety about old files maybe needing conversion. Maybe next computer upgrade?...

Started with 500 bytes of Sinclair and cut my teeth on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Basic and assembler, but that was a long time ago. Been Mozilla in one form or another for a decade or more. Better email handling, in my view as well.

I can't imagine what you ever use IE for. Do you create web pages? I use Arachnophilia for that, though I'm sure there's more sophisticated stuff available. The modern software has totally lost sight of elegant solutions, being spoiled with effectively unlimited memory and processor speed.

Ah, for the good old days...
