Several people have noticed

Eddie Mair | 10:28 UK time, Thursday, 29 March 2007

the link on the right to the PM Frogger's Refuge. Do use and enjoy!

In a while I hope to post another item that didn't make it to air. It's traffic related.

Thank you for that link, it saves me a click!

While you are adding links and buttons, could I put in a request for a link to

    'Listen to the Latest programme'

    and

    'Bottom of page' ?

They'd be really helpful as lots of us are Listenagainners and some of the threads get really long and you get fed up scrolling down. Because of course, every second helps and we'll be able to add even more of those Sony-nominated comments!! ;-O/

But, yes, thank you! and I'm sure Jonnie will be very pleased to have it as a 'welcome home' present.

Would you be so kind as to watch your email box? I've a suggestion for you to consider. Thank you.

Gossipmistress - Re:Bottom of Page. What about Ctrl/End? I use it all the time.

What I would REALLY, REALLY like would be if the PREVIOUS - MAIN - NEXT buttons could be copied to beneath the last comment. They appear twice at the top of each thread - I'd be surprised if that was the original designer's intention.

Gossipmistress, whilst I can't help with the listen again link it might be helpful to mention that the "home" and "end" keys on your PC usually take you to the top and bottom on a web page respectively. If you're using a Mac, I don't know what the alternatives are - or if there are any. It does depend on the "focus" though - because if, for example, you're typing a comment, the "home" and "end" keys take you to the top and bottom of the comment. Which isn't as helpful. You have to click outside the comment box.

Okay, it can drive me even madder.

Slightly off topic, I just took a moment to have a look at last Friday's discussion to see what Drinks had got herself into. Taxation is a funny one, isn't it? I know this isn't really the point of the discussion, but I remember mailing Woman's Hour (ages ago) to make the point that people can pay more tax if they wish. I have no idea if the law has changed since then - but I doubt it. The issue came about because there was an item where two contributors were saying that taxation was "too low" - I may be wrong, but I think it was Polly Toynbee and Diane Abbott. I suggested that they could pay more if they wished because taxation levels represented the "minimum level". I find the subject quite interesting - for a while I wondered if you could have a campaign to persuade people to pay more for specific causes (like education, or the NHS). Whilst this raises the somewhat broader question about taxation hypothecation, you just know it could never work.

We shouldn't need to tax ourselves...

But why would one want to move onto the previous or next page without adding a comment first? Having done that, of course, one ends up back at the top of the page. What's that I hear you say? Humph (20) - Yep the Back button will take you back to your message. But if you click on the message that confirms your post has gone through and invites you to return to thread, you will go back to the top of that thread, which is sensible enough because you are unlikely to want to comment again on the same thread.

The "recent comments" block at the top, although working pretty well today is usually hopelessly behind events and can’t be relied on to tell you where people are posting. In any event it only covers 5 items and there can be as many as 20 active threads at any one time. I’m a bit sad in that I try to skim back to see where people are commenting – thus I always go to the bottom of the thread. To be able to jump from bottom to bottom (stop that sniggering!) would be very useful – hence the call for the PREVIOUS – MAIN - NEXT buttons at that point.

Frances O - Sorry I didn't express myself very clearly. I didn't mean Private Eye should be let loose on this blog. I meant the poor souls who are Radio 3 listeners, forbidden from making any criticism of what they hear there. Do you think they would be allowed to make a criticism here, or would the secret Radio 3 police find them out & get it removed? All most intriguing...

    All,

Further to page navigation issues, a few more shortcuts:

[alt/left arrow] = 'Back' browser button
[home] takes you to the top, and if you click on 'previous' or 'next', you get to the top of them, from where [end] will take you to the bottom.

If you only scroll and don't move the mouse ot touchpad pointer, [home] will take you to the top, and you'll find the pointer poised for another 'previous' or 'next' as the case may be.

[alt/right arrow] obviously = 'forward' browser button.

Just thought you'd like to know, in case they never get around to giving us useful 'next' and 'previous' buttons on our bottoms.
