Weekend Watch - 11th December 2009
Want to know what to watch this weekend on TV? Well here's some movies which are worth a look... and one which you might want to avoid.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Friday, Fiver, 9pm
The toothy spy's best outing, a perfect blend of bad, un-PC jokes and....er... well, that's it. You'll also notice the fella on the right isn't actually Mike Myers as Austin but Ricky Gervais, as David Brent, as Austin. Complicated much?
Friday, Film4, 9pm
Watch Beyonce having her thunder well and truly stolen by the awesome Jennifer Hudson in this big, brassy, bouffant tale of a 60s girl band making it big. It's the kind of film you imagine X-Factor's Brian Friedman really liking.
The Shawshank Redemption
Saturday, Channel 4, 9.30pm
'Fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free' etc etc. You've seen it before (I hope) but this bromance remains one of the most uplifting, beautifully told films ever. And you can NEVER go wrong with a Morgan Freeman voiceover.
Ali G Indahouse
Saturday, ITV1, 11.35pm
Before Sacha Baron-Cohen realised that spoof documentaries were funnier, he tried his hand at a normal movie. It wasn't that funny. That said, I have got Ali G & Shaggy 'Me Julie' on my generic MP3 player.
Elf
Sunday, Channel 4, 5:45pm
Amazing, amazing, amazing. It's funny, of course. But at Yuletide, you gotta have some sugary moments too. Will Ferrell manages to combine the both perfectly. It's Buddy brilliant (see what I did there? Genius).
Epic Movie
Sunday, Channel 4, 9.30pm
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer could well be the least talented film-makers in Hollywood. And they didn't even make Marley & Me. Their attempts at spoofs over the years have included Date Movie, Disaster Movie and Meet The Spartans. Dislike them for it.
