Friday Reviews & Weekend Watch - 22nd Jan 2010
Worthy drama with Jake Gyllenhaal falling for his bro's wife (Natalie Portman) whilst her soldier hubby's lost in Afghanistan. Tobey Maguire is on fire as the marine stuck in the middle but often this is just more dreary than dramatic. Not to mention the U2 track over the credits.

Armored
It's spelled wrong and it's a bit rubbish. There's plenty of brilliantly grizzled old timers in this heist movie (Lawrence Fishburne, Jean Reno) but no surprises.
2 stars.
The Boys Are Back
Clive Owen monotones his way through this soppy TV-film style true story about a single dad coping with his kids. It's the kind of thing you'd expect to see on ITV starring Robson Green (when he's not extreme fishing).

A Prophet
Now we're talking. Awesome, awesome, awesome French prison drama about a young Arabic inmate out to beat the system. Gritty, yes. But also strangely hopeful thanks to charisma-by-the-slop-bucketload from star Tahar Rahim. This is more Scarface than Shawshank but punchier than either. It's the crime movie, 21st century style.
5 stars.
Weekend Watch - What films are worth looking at on TV this weekend.
Saturday 23 January
10:30pm - 12:45am, ´óÏó´«Ã½2
Deliberately odd but actually awesome story of a 19th century French pauper born with a heightened sense of smell and a strange way with women. The freaky Ben Whishaw stars.
Memoirs Of A Geisha
Saturday 23 January
6:15pm - 9:00pm, Fiver
The pasty look is so now (just ask Nicola Girls Aloud). These ladies were rocking it years ago and director Rob Marshall has done a glossy job of telling their story. Harrowing but beautiful.

Slumdog Millionaire

Never heard of it. It'll flop.
