Snow Joke: Films to watch with Snow in them
As the song goes, "the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful and since there's no place to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow". Since many of you might be enjoying a snow day today why not wrap up warm by the fire and stick on a good film which has snow in it.
Let's start with a classic Academy Award winning film by the Coen Brothers, Fargo.
A black comedy thriller set in the very snowy landscape of Fargo in North Dakota, it features incredible performances by William H Macy, Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand and will not only have you copying their accents for days but also will never let you look at a wood chipper in the same way again.
What about if you want to be scared of the snow? Well then The Thing is the film that'll help you with that.
Kurt Russell stars in horror guru John Carpenters film about some Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. It was originally released around the same time as E.T. and suffered a box office failure but has since gained cult status with a prequel currently in the works. Film critic Roger Ebert called the special effects "among the most elaborate, nauseating, and horrifying sights yet achieved." It's a cold, gory and scary thing.... Get it? Thing!? Alright.. Moving on.
Want something a bit more family friendly then how about Cool Runnings, Home Alone or Edward Scissorhands.
Cool Runnings is the Disney feel good classic loosely based on the true story of the Jamaican Bobsled team. John Candy plays the coach of a team of Jamaicans who become the first team from the country to participate in the Bobsled at the Winter Olympics. The best bit is when he keeps the egg in the sled.
If you love seeing people fall over, snowy scenes and children slapping aftershave on their face and screaming then Home Alone will be the one for you this afternoon. A film which is never not funny, this is the one that made Macaulay Culkin a star as he plays the son accidently left at home over Christmas and has to stop two dim-witted burglars from breaking in. Interestingly, Macaulay is now engaged to Mila Kunis from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and the voice of Meg in Family Guy.
Finally why not settle down and watch Johnny Depp chip away at some ice in Tim Burtons Edward Scissorhands? The fantasy drama tells you what happens when a gentle young man, who happens to have scissors for hands, falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl. It was the first collaboration between Depp & Burton which has since brought us Sweeny Todd, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and later this year Alice In Wonderland.
So there you go... you now know what to watch when you get in from the snowball fight to continue that frosty feeling.
