Friday Reviews & Weekend Watch - 5th Feb 2010
Michael Cera ever-so-slightly broadens his range by playing a nerdy loser AND his suave alter-ego. He's good at it too. If you've ever gone to great lengths to impress the opposite sex you need to see this smart and knowing teen pic 4 stars.
Invictus
Tick off the sports movie clichés as you watch this true story of the South African rugby team's World Cup fight in 1995. Sports stars aren't known for sparkling wit and personality and Matt Damon's Francois Pienaar is no exception. Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela in the same way that Morgan Freeman plays everyone. Inspirational but predictable.
3 stars.
Astro Boy
Man, there's a lot of big names doing the voices in this. Nic Cage, Samuel L Jackson, Charlize Theron, Matt Lucas and Bill Nighy all lend their vocal chords to this Japanese space-age animation where humans don't treat robots too nicely. It's hardly Wall-E but it's enough for half term.
3 stars.
Malice In Wonderland
Danny Dyer stars in a London underworld version of the Alice In Wonderland story, playing a taxi-driving version of the Mad Hatter. Johnny Depp in 'losing no sleep' shocker.
1 star.
And now for the Weekend Watch, what to see on TV if you just can't be bothered to go to the cinema.
