World Twenty20 on this website (47)
- 9 Sep 07, 12:42 PM
One of the things I hear regularly at TV Centre is the need for the 大象传媒 to provide content to attract users from the 16-24 age group. In line with that policy, I am going to start this blog entry by mentioning the singer (who had his first hit record in 1956).
It was Tommy who gave voice to the words "Hold it, flash, bang, wallop". Ok, he was singing about photography, but those words could equally well apply to the type of cricket we can expect to see during the inaugural in South Africa.
Blades will flash, spectators will either duck or try to impress their mates by taking a catch and umpires will raise their hands to the heavens.
The faces of bowlers, meanwhile, will take on the sort of look you see from someone who has spent ages arranging crockery in a box prior to moving house, only for the bottom to fall out as they step outside onto the front path.
Elsewhere on this blog, Test match Special producer Adam Mountford has set out details of the 大象传媒's radio coverage of the 13-day tournament and what follows from me is a summary of what you can expect to see on this website.
We will be providing full scorecards for every game, which will update at frequent intervals while play is going on, detailed match reports and post-match reaction.
There will also be over by over text commentaries on selected games during the first round phase:
11 September - South Africa v West Indies (starts 1700 BST)
12 September - Pakistan v Scotland (starts 1300 BST)
13 September - England v Zimbabwe (starts 1300 BST)
13 September - India v Scotland (starts 1700 BST)
14 September - Australia v England (starts 1300 BST)
14 September - India v Pakistan (starts 1700 BST)
Once the first round is out of the way, however, we will be offering text commentaries on every game for the remainder of the tournament - the Super 8s, semi-finals and final.
You can, as usual, offer your thoughts via text or e-mail and even though Messrs Ben Dirs and Tom Fordyce have temporarily abandoned cricket for life on the road at the Rugby World Cup, Sam Lyon, Mark Mitchener and Pranav Soneji and others will strive to provide a similar mix of information and irreverence.
All we need now then, is some spectacular cricket to describe - and I'm certain we're going to get plenty of it, even without Messrs, Tendulkar, Lara, Ganguly and Fleming.
Because this is a new competition, it's very difficult to make a confident prediction as to who will win it. Australia will play with the same ruthless approach which has served them so well over the last few years, but I think this format will help other teams close the gap.
Earlier this year, I tipped India to win the World Cup based on "guesswork, pure and simple" and they were eliminated in the first round. Apologies, therefore, to New Zealand for saddling them with the Grunill curse this time.

Thank you once again for providing this service -- it is a great service you are doing for us not living in the United Kingdom and would move heaven and earth to get even a thin bologna slice sized piece of the action!

Australia v South Africa final.
Australia to win.
Pakistan cant even put up a team let alone win the tournament. They are in disarray and im not sure 'Henry' Lawson is the man for the job. If all accounts are correct, Shoab should be banned for life. What a joke he has become.
Dark Horse - If Sri Lanka's batsmen fire look out, they may post some very big numbers.

I really don't understand why the 大象传媒 persists with its text commentary. Given that it is done well in the private sector (The Guardian), how does it qualify as public value?

Unfortunately like a lot of other people in the UK I cannot listen to commentary of the Twenty20 World Cup as I cannot get any reception. Why can't it be broadcast on Radio 4 LW as normal.

The timings for the matches you show are at odds with Adam Mountford's unless of course you define BST as something other than British Summer Time....

why is the english cricket ruining the 'gentleman's game'?.at lords, the venue for the natwest final it was obvious that the british players were dubious in their approach to the game. the filthy flintoff had not got the guts to remove sachin's wicket,so mr.aleem dar came to the rescue!.(a conspiracy can't be ruled out!).sachin was denied his deserving century at least twice in the series.the british players certainly are a disgusting lot right from the times of bradman & the infamous'bodyline series'.the british cricket team was a 'DIRTY DOZEN':11 PLAYERS & A LUNATIC UMPIRE!.
THE VENUE:NOT LORDS BUT:'DEMON'S'!!!
FEARLESS!

They come around....anyway, this world would be a better place if everyone played cricket...........!

I am so glad that 20/20 is beginning to take off.
My girlfriend has shown an interest in cricket (she is a football fan) but, like a lot of none cricket devotees, finds all the rules a tad daunting. I must say I can sympathise with her because I have got the same problem with rugby. With the advent of 20/20 I notice a definate rise and even enthusiasm for the game from her for which I thank everyone involved in cricket.
I would like to wish the English 20/20 squad the best of luck.

I always believe that twenty20 cricket is a different game to master. We'll see the bigger hitters making all the difference here.
I hope some teams will learn to keep their fielding tight (no names mentioned). Others will have to improve on their batting line up. I feel that England are sadly struggling here, but the 1st match they face agaisnt Zimbabwe should give them a feel of they are to play the rest of their matches.
The groups are matched out evenly. Some may struggle like Bangladesh, but this will certainly be a good ground for them to test their players.
We all know Austrialia are the favourites, but this year it would be great to see some other team break the monotony of Australia winning and take the cup away.
Either way it will be a stunnign final

India might turn out to be the surprise package.
Firstly there is absolutely no pressure cause no one back home expects anything from this team. This is a HUGE advantage and might help the team play with more freedom.
Secondly, some of the players are on a come-back mission - Sehwag, Harbhajan, Irfan Pathan etc and would be eager to perform well.
I think we stand a good chance...

Radio coverage? I am afriad that wont cut it for 16-24 year olds, get your wallet out and at least secure the streaming internet rights 大象传媒......
Complain about this comment
why does everything have to be aimed at 16-24 year olds? so called older people (i'm 36 for goodness sake) dont want their pleasures watered down to cater for the lack of understanding of younger generations
people change their viewing/listening/reading habits as they get older, eg i used to listen to radio 1 when i was 16 now i listen to i'm sorry i havent a clue. i used to read the beano when i was 10 now i read the telegraph. i used to watch tom and jerry when i was 4 now i watch newsnight.
just do whatever you are doing well and let those that want to receive or join in do so - but please no more dumbing down for those that cant understand or sexing up for that dont have a deep knowledge at 16 years old.
they will as they get older

I'm a cricket mad mother of a teenage son who has just started to watch cricket, in its twenty20 form. He understands the game, through osmosis, but hadnt come across runners before tonight's game (WI-SA) He thinks runners are a way of cheating, if you're injured you should leave the field. Can the runner be stumped? It's complicated to watch and takes away from the immediacy of the twenty20 game.
Any comments?

South Africa to win for sure, another fine performance today! Pakistan do not have the skill in their team, best team of world cup surely was the winners!

Liz,
Runners are legal -- if a batsman is too injured to run but can still bat, then they can ask for a runner. The runner, according to the rules, must be someone who has already been dismissed. In a sense, the runner is that batsman's legs. If he's run out, so goes the batsman. If the batsman's stumped, then goodbye runner. It's sorta like a 2-for-1 package.

Why even pick specialist bowlers for 20 20. Why not just pick 11 batsmen. Their bowling figures will probably be just as good.

What are the differences in rules between twenty
and ODIs because teams score 200 in 20 overs
in twenty, extrapolating that would be like scoring
500 in 50 0vers in an ODI?

It is hard to imagine that twenty20 cricket can go up to the WCup level.
It can not be the game of professional tigers or lions, may be best fit for Gavaskar, Kapil, ZMiyandad, SteevWah, NHussain, Lara, etc.
It is still not too late, to stop such bad business of cricket.
ODIs are the best form of this game. If it is too time consuming, make it 40 - 40 over game, not less.
If you still would like to go for twenty20 cricket WCup, then make all rules near the word TWENTY: --- suggestions are (I) each batsman can play a maximum of 20 balls only, (II) each bowler can bowl a maximum of 20 balls.
How is Thaaaaaaaaat !
