Christian Bale receives Academy Award nomination

Christian Bale has been nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor in The Fighter.

The actor, who was born in Haverfordwest, plays Dicky Eklund in the film, the former boxer and drug addict turned trainer to younger half brother Micky Ward, played by Mark Wahlberg.

As expected, British actor Colin Firth has picked up a nod in the best actor category for his role in The King's Speech. Both actors are favoured to each pick up an Oscar following their respective successes in the recently awarded Golden Globes.

The 2011 Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on 27 February.
