World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

Have you seen this man?

paul_fletcher.gifLONDON - Help needed. During the World Cup I am very keen to find a man called Didi Senft.

He rides a very large bicycle and usually follows the Tour de France, though I鈥檓 told that this year he will be in his native Germany for the World Cup.

Senft also dresses as a red devil, is a bit of an eccentric and the wheels on his bike look like huge footballs.

I would very much like to meet him and have a go on his bike - any ideas where we can find him?

I doubt whether he will be at , since this is exclusively for supporters of Sven鈥檚 men.

Situated just down the road from the in Baden Baden, the organisers have laid on big screens, headline DJs and a giant beer tent. There are also coaches to and from all of England鈥檚 games.

The site holds 5,000 people and the organisers are hopeful that it will become the destination for England fans in Germany.

After watching the England B international against Belarus on Thursday a few fans might have decided not to bother.

I watched the match with a mate in a pub in Shepherds Bush.

It all seemed to be going swimmingly well, your run-of-the-mill excruciatingly boring England friendly, until Robert Green fell over and the bloke from Belarus slotted the ball into the empty net.

After the boys in white - them not us - took the lead, the evening turned into what might be described as a glimpse of the sort of emotional rollercoaster that lies in store for millions of people over the next month.

The pub was suddenly full of middle aged, inebriated men screaming at large screens as though their desperate pleas could change the course of the match and prevent their team from slipping to defeat.

Wonderful.

Didi is from Storkow, near Berlin. If you type "Didi Senft" into Google, you'll find the top answer is an interview with him (translated presumably into English, as he doesn't speak it) from a cycling website.

I took a picture of his gigantic bike at the foot of a Tour climb ten years ago. It was about 9:30 in the morning and chucking it down, so he hadn't emerged from his sleeping bag yet
