From our reporters in Germany

Saturday snippets

LONDON - Good news for 大象传媒 South East's Rob Smith, who is finally on his way to Germany (and should have arrived by now).

Smith, familiar to those in Kent, Surrey & Sussex as a presenter on TV show South East Today, is travelling in a genuine VW camper (unlike Fletch and Ricco who have a big ugly white box thing) - though it appears to have let him down.

Stat of the day from Nicky Campbell on Five Live's superb wall-to-wall World Cup coverage (I know I am biased but it really is good, no?).

If David Beckham or Michael Owen score, they will become only the second British player to score in three successive World Cup finals (the first was Joe Jordan, in 1974, 1978 & 1982).

I know Campbell is not everyone's cup of tea but he does have a neat turn of phrase. Many journalists wrote many words about Sven's forthright and passionate outburst following Wayne Rooney's return to Germany. "The mouse that (finally) roared," was how many described him.

Campbell's description made me laugh the most - along the lines of: "He's like the mild-mannered geek in your office who sits in the corner and says nothing all year then gets drunk at the Christmas party".

I also found out via Five Live's match commentary of the game (don't fancy meeting them much but then again Poland were atrocious..) that the country is the biggest exporter of bananas in the world.

A few other snippets before I go..
The Press Association are reporting that:

The partner of England football star Frank Lampard was kicked off a World Cup flight when she threw a tantrum on the Tarmac, British Airways said today. Elen Rives, 28, swore at plane staff when she was told at Heathrow she had too much hand luggage to take in the Club Class cabin to Stuttgart, Germany.

Another row has also hit Togo's chances (??) - .

I don't want to tempt fate, but few reports of trouble in Germany yet.

There are an estimated 30,000 England fans in Frankfurt for today's game - and according to reports from several news agencies this morning, police made only 20 arrests last night (some English, some German, some Polish) after a bit of a stand-off in the central Roemer Square, (fans chanting '10 German Bombers', apparently) and in the red light district by the main train station.

The Associated Press said there were 19 arrests in Berlin where more than 300,000 people gathered on the so-called 'fan mile' in front of the Brandenburg Gate to watch hosts Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 on giant television screens.

No problems in either.

@Claire S, blog editor, I hate to be a killjoy especially on a day such as this when England are going to be kicking of the World Cup.

But do the likes Nicky Campbell and Chris Moyles really have to be in Germany for the World Cup on behalf of the 大象传媒? The general quoted figure in the press is that the 大象传媒 have more than 300+ people in Germany covering the World Cup. But I expect that figure only covers 大象传媒 Sports. Rather than the various add on shows, value for money? I think not.

Plus further to the various troubles with tickets at this World Cup. How many 大象传媒 executives will be attending the World Cup?

She's right as I've just checked it on Wikepedia which doesn't lie : Scotand qualified for three World Cups on the trot and Jordan scored in everyone, not that it did Scotland much good. Come on England!

I was watching the England VS Paraguay game. England [with Beckham] managed to score a first goal within the first three minutes.

Unfortunately, humidity and high temperature contributed to a game in slow motion with Paraguay having problems in getting their act together and England maintaining it one to zero goal.

The classification for Group B will depend on the game between Sweden and Trinidad & Tobago.

PS: I want to reiterate my support for England and I hope they classify for the next rounds.

PPS:Regardless, I want to congradulate England on its first victory in the Cup.

Why on earth are Togo players complaining over win bonuses?! They're there to make up the numbers and will not be winning any games-these are the most pointless negotiations ever!! Agreed?
