Sven's World Cup sideshow
- 14 Jun 06, 06:08 PM
NUREMBERG - Sven-Goran Eriksson's closing press conferences of his reign as England manager have been among the most intriguing and entertaining during his time in charge.
From presenting a Sir Geoffrey Boycott-style dead bat to most inquiries for the last five years, Sven has suddenly opened up. A little bit of controversy here. A little bit of humour there.
Even in the tension of World Cup combat, Eriksson is easily at his most relaxed - perhaps because he knows he can leave it all behind in three weeks.
Eriksson gave his verdict on Wayne Rooney's fitness in his media conference before effectively being hi-jacked by the foreign journalists and asked to give a run-down on most of the big guns in the tournament.
What did he think of Australia? What did he think of Argentina? What did he think of Brazil? What did he think of Italy?
All questioned answered politely and positively. Maybe because it meant he didn't have to answer questions about Rooney.
It was almost Sven's very own verdict on the World Cup danger men.
The sense of humour is there as well.
What did he think it would do to make the English media happy?
"Impossible" he said, hands outstretched to much laughter.
Hardly Les Dawson or Tarby I grant you, but there is an air of almost unreal bonhomie about Eriksson as the credits start rolling on his England career.
And there has been a defiance over Rooney - especially in his clear insistence on standing up to Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United - that has surprised seasoned Eriksson observers.
Now if he can just take a little bit of that dash and daring into his tactics, then England might actually be on to something.
The dark side of the conference was the news of Gary Neville's injury, with the Manchester United captain now awaiting a scan verdict on his calf problem.
Neville will be missed if he has a serious problem, not just as one of the most impressive leaders in the side, but also an eloquent and combative speaker with the media.
Always ready to say something. And always ready to say something interesting.
As a Merseysider, is it a crime for me to say I have actually grown to admire Neville's outspoken, and occasionally just a little bit obtuse, nature?
There you go...I've said it.

Just a shame it wasn't shown on this website - any reason why not? Very annoying :(

We were intending to stream the conference but as sometimes happens with these things, circumstances overtook us and we were not able to do so. Sorry.
We have shown many of them live and will continue to endeavour to do so.
In the meantime, the highlights from today will be up on this story soon - they are being edited as I write.

Help! I don't know who else to ask, I'm driving through france tomorrow (bad planning I know!) Do you know what fm radio station in france, is covering the England Trinidad game live? Please help!

Martin: I believe RMC is broadcasting matches in France on FM. Frequency depends on location, often around 104 MHz.

I was unable to see the or hear the Tunisia VS Saudi Arabia Game. It seemed that most stations did not want to broadcast the game. The only exception was Univision which broadcasted the game. People saw the game in spite of the humidity. Interest peaked when there was a 1-1 equalizer followed by 2 to 1 in favor of Saudi Arabia. Interest declined after the second equalizer 2-2.

For all the people that dislike Sven, there is a silent majority of fans behind him who still think he's an outstanding manager. More important, the players all seem to like and respect him. Who cares if he is a bit straight-laced? He gets the job done.
I couldn't believe the sniping after our first game. He played cautiously, because he could see the effect of the heat on the players; which was something the armchair experts hadn't really appreciated.
People have described Sven's approach as "Italian tactics". Given Italy's recent record versus England's, I think these are probably a good thing!
Anyway, Sven's good judgement led the team to victory. We couldn't have asked more of him. If we win the World Cup, I wonder whether people will still be so keen to replace him?

I agree with an earlier comment the nevilles are not that great I would much rather see Carragher at right back, as regards the nevilles at Maine road we used to sing "If the Nevilles can play for England so CAN I"

I agree with Nick. All this post-match talk that Sven was too scared to put Walcott on, and that he realised then that sending Defoe home was a mistake, was complete nonsense. He wanted to put on a 5th midfielder and that is what he did.
Sadly Sven and Hargreaves suffer from the same problem - Joe Public forms his opinion based on the tabloid media and the tabloid media don't like Sven or Hargreaves because they are foreigners. Sven's answer of "impossible" might have been perceived as a joke, but he was spot on.

I think Gary Neville is very under rated. He's a safe pair of feet, which is more than you can say for some ex international defenders - remember Phil Neal ?
Anyway, i am watching the game in Trotters - a bar in Port of Spain , Trinidad.
That will be an experience.

It's easy to say that England should beat T&T, but they SHOULD have beaten NI too. Need anyone say anything about no easy games at this level?

Now we can see the wisdom of arranging a game against Jamaica in the buildup. Trinidad gave Sweden a harder game than anyone thought they would, and they've never been colonised by Sweden.
Sven is just gate happy. Look how happy Scolari was to get a last-minute reprieve. Sven's done 5 years hard time. In a month's time he can take his bonus and Euros and go and rub rollmops with all the weathergirls he likes, and no-one will care less. I expect a large part of his mind is focussed on exactly that.

I am becoming quite annoyed by all the sniping about Owen Hargreaves. He is a fine young player who fills in where needed. Not necessarily in his preferred position. One does not command a regular first team place in a strong Bayern Munich side if one is average or off ones game! Leave the boy alone, he has never let England down and chases forever. Would be nice if all the team were as fit as him and able to run all game. Yes, I know its hot out there but so it is for everyone else.
I shall be watching the game from my home in Cuernavaca,Mexico at 11am. I will be decked out in my England away strip(the red one) I expect the team to wear the home kit (the white one!) The temp here is similar to that in Germany around the 30-32 degree mark, quite pleasant really with the fans on full bore and the cold beers etc. Of course on Friday I will have to wear my Mexico kit ( either that or get beaten up by the wife!) What chances a England v Mexico final...well one can dream...

We will at some point employ a holding midfield player. There will be calls for Michael Carrick who is very good, or Jamie Carragher who is equally very good, to play that position. Carragher particularly has a good claim as he has a champion's league medal and an FA Cup winners medal so plenty of experience.
Of course neither of these will play since the player who will be picked is most likely to be the one who is worse than both of them, if fans are to be believed. Yes Owen Hargreaves with an Intercontinental Cup winner's medal, a Champions League winner's medal, 4 league winner's medals, 2 FA Cup equivalent medals and a League Cup equivalent medal who, in his first outing in the Champions League, kept the likes of Figo and Roberto Carlos in his back pocket who, while he was on the pitch playing the holding role against Paraguay, Robinson didn't have a single save to make. Owen Hargreaves who has only played a quarter of a competitive match for England in his normal position may well end up playing that role ahead of 2 players who don't always play that role, and we'll all whinge about it. You want to know what Hargreaves is like? Ask a Bayern Munich fan. What you see for England is not what Hargreaves is about and the fact the he hasn't shone for England has a lot more to do with the manager than the player.
Another thing.
Gary Neville.
Why?
Why not Jamie Carragher who can at least pass to an English player. Were it not for some stoic defending from our centre-halves and a decent save from Robinson, mistakes from both Gary Neville and Ashley Cole could've led to goals for Paraguay. Not a whisper from the press / fans. Hargreaves playing? BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Maybe if he starts robot dancing they'll stop booing :(

Why are Sven concerned about Brazil? Instead, shouldn麓t he speak about England麓s current opponents such as Trinidad Tobago and Sweeden? Or, have England already gone through the first round?

I agree with Simon Brown. Finally someone who will comment that Gary Neville is a disaster in the team. The only time he seems to pick a pass to a team-mate is when Beckham makes himself available.
Give Jamie Carragher the right-back position ahead of Neville, even if Neville is fit. As an Everton fan, that is a hard thing to say, because I can't stand Liverpool players, but when it comes to club vs. country, Carragher is the best man for the job....Unless Sven had bothered to look at Phil Neville!!!
But saying that, Hargreaves does have a lot of qualities that he can offer to the cause, and given the opportunity, I'm quite sure he would perform well. I've seen him play live on countless occasions, in many positions, and England fans still have yet to see what he can do. Given the chance, he can prove the boo-boys wrong...and I hope he has that chance.
However, I have a question...Why, when we have just begun a tournament in which we are one of the favourites to win, do the public and media question every little thing that happens? Can we not for once say "We believe in what can be done."
Can't all "professional" journalists just stop asking s**t questions and instead help promote a very real fact that we can win? Positive news sells just as much crap as negative news and I for one would rather see a headline that says "Neville injury not a concern," than "Neville injury spells the end of Englands chances of ever being able to even think that we can win anything even though we have a damn good squad!"
Why is there all this stuff about a dispute between Sven and the FA? Who cares if there is? wait until our World Cup is over before publishing these stories. It can have nothing but a bad effect on the players. Those "people(*)" reporting these stories should once and for all be told to shut the F up. For once, can England believe?
(*) Painfully sad people whose own lives are so boring they feel the need to unleash a false reality of misery upon those who read/listen to what they say, just to make themselves feel like they are "helping the nation!!!" To those people, I say F%&K Off!!!!!!!!!

I think Sven can now relax a bit more at press conferences because he knows he is going. I think thats the reason he now answers freely and offers his opinions about other teams. Good to hear his say that Australia can beat Brazil next Monday morning.

Simon Brown that's spot on. Most of us form our opinion from the media and are armchair fans when it come to England. Have any of us actually seen Hargreaves play in Germany? I'm sure that Sven's scouts have. A lot of the negative commentary comes from the fact that he is not known by English fans and press and has a slightly strange voice. If you listen hard he almost sounds German. I have seen nothing wrong with his performances; he may not be exciting to watch, but can do a job when needed. And maybe speaking like that he won't miss a penalty - Who knows?

t&t played as if they were looking for a draw against sweden. if england do not come out and play a more passing oriented offense, the same result is right on the horizon.
as an aside, it pains me to see the remarks in this thread about neville. he is a quality player.
i would love to see more players with his passion here in america. sadly, american do not equate football with passion. and that is why i get my football fix from england/europe.
blow out t&t, england. get your pride back.

Nick - Well an armchair amatuer should of been able to see the other games at the same time. See Robben, the pasty white guy from north europe currently based in 'sunny' London able to run all game dribbling people for fun. And get named man of the match, both teams playing good football. While Beckham who lives in Spain (!!!) couldn't handle it... even though he has never dribbled as much as Robben did in his life. And every other game has managed to produce football at that time. Spain put on a masterclass today with players based in sunny liverpool.
And Italy has different players, they don't have 2 midfielders scoring 20 goals each. Its like asking Ronnie and Kaka to sit in as DM's and protect the defence. They don't have players who play English football of 100 mph pace.
As for the press conference, I don't really see the point of it. He basically didn't answer any question, just went in the typical circle. 'I might play him', 'He might start', 'The world might spin off its axis'. And he almost always has a joke about the media.

Having kept quiet for the first 6 days of the tournament - having read all the carping about Englands performance, Sven麓s selections and tactics etc.. etc.. etc.. I can remain silent no more. Several things have become apparent recently.
1) Most of the carping about team selection has come from club supporters sticking up for their favourites - not true England supporters.
2) It is now apparent that the heat England played in WAS a contributing factor to the way they played.
3) It will be as hot and humid tonight when we take on T&T. It will not be the quality of the opposition that will make England look a better team. They WILL be better as they will have become more acclimatised to the conditions.
4) Having seen the effect of David Odonkor麓s introduction to the German team last night, who can now criticise Sven for bringing Walcott into the frame? He is faster than Henry and will terrify defenders if he runs at them. You do not need loads of experience behind you to be a threat - just speed, beautiful speed. Klinsmann was pilloried here in Germany when he named Odonkor in the squad. Now he is seen as a visionary.
Nuff said.

I am English. I live in Spain. I live with 2 Germans.
Quite frankly amazed by the reaction of the English press after our first game, and even more stunned by the reaction to Hargreaves.
The Spanish press are behind the team 100%, and even if they are sceptical about parts of the team and manager (a manager who sent Raul back to the dressing room to change his top because it was yellow ... yellow is the "bad luck colour" didn't you know?) they back them to the hilt during the tournaments.
I have learnt that the best way to find out what is going on in the English football camp is to watch the interviews online. Then you can judge for yourself. You can feel SGEs frustration with the press when he speaks, because quite frankly, he doesn't understand it. Do british newspaper writers have a different passport to everrybody else?
As for the Hargreaves issue, because of my flatmates, I watch the Bundeslga almost every weekend. Hargreaves is a top player. Full stop. He is a great part of a Champions league winning team and I would love it if he started this PM afternoon and shut up all the people who complain about his inclusion in the squad because he doesn't play in England.
On the same subject it is an abysmal failure of English national team support to boo one of your own players when he comes on as the English fans did in Frankfurt. Dispicable, and Beckham was roight to speak out against it.

it is getting boring hearing peopl esay hargreaves and sven are villified unfairly, for one any england manager will be harrassed by the media that is just one of those things people buy the newspapers so they prin it. Hargreaves is a utility player for england and when he has played has set the world a light its simple as that. he isn't completely reliable, for byern muncih he is great but veron was great for lazio but not with utd as they play differently and have to do different jobs, that is the sme with hargreaves.
he is used to be a stable player like phil neveille is for everton or carragher. Carrick can defend and pass yet has only been givn one cap where hargreaves has 30 and still has critics.
As for sven in the last 5 yrs england have done ok but some tactical and substitute decision are strange and haven't worked

Sven certainly seems to be relaxed now he knows he is going. Picture the scene in the England dressing room at half time against Paraguay:-
Sven: " Great first half boys, why don't you take the second half off, do some shopping with your wives "
Owen: "Shouldn't we keep trying to attack ?"
Sven: " If it gets difficult Michael I will bring you on as our impact sub ".
Owen: "I'm already on boss"
Sven: " You are ? Sorry Michael I hadn't spotted you ".

Gary Neville being injured is the best news since Rooneys scan allowed him to fly back to Germany. Jamie Carragher is by FAR the superior player. Neville is not a World Cup winning player simple as that. Carra is far more influential, better positionally and has much more stamina. This over reliance on Neville has to stop. When was the last good game he played for England. Carra should be in the starting eleven at right back. When Ashley Cole pushes forward England can change to a back three with Rio, Terry and Carra all of who are world class defenders. Gary Neville is not World Class and never has been and its about time people realised that. He is frequently caught out of position. If I was an opposing coach I would instruct my team to allow Neville as much possession as possible as he is useless. He drives forward and then leaves a gaping hole behind him. GET RID!

Whether Hargreaves plays, what substitutions Sven makes, whether Rooney is fit, Walcott; All of these are incidental to us beating T&T.
We WILL beat T&T today IF the senior 'star' players (Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, Neville - not playing today I know, both Coles, Ferdinand) ensure that we keep hold of the ball and don't constantly try to hit ridiculous 40 yard 'passes' either to Crouch's head or in the channels for an out-numbered Owen thus giving the ball away.
If we're worried about the heat then there's an easy answer; Keep the ball. Make T&T chase it around and wait for an opening to exploit. Individually every player we will have out there will be superior to theirs but if we keep giving them the ball then how can we take advantage of that superiority?
We spent long periods of the Paraguay game thinking we could score a goal within 2 passes of gaining possession and thus we spent long periods of the game wasting energy trying to regain possession.
If we need to hit a long ball to Crouch then let's hit him where he can get the ball down and link play rather than only giving him the option of a flick-on.
Mind you, if I've got all the answers, why am I sitting here at a desk whereas Sven's at the World Cup...? ;-)
Complain about this post
For me, Owen Hargreaves is not a problem as a player. What disheartens me is that when Sven brings him on, it means we have to endure wave after wave of attacks from ordinary opponents (Paraguay) who previously had not put two passes together. The way to combat heat problems is to keep the ball - not chase it like headless chickens. Sven is tactically hopeless and he will blow our chances of winning the world cup despite having some of the best players in the world.

I admire Sven for his purposeful sense of movement, it actually seems like he has a plan and is sticking to it. Despite the media and his detractors, he is going to do it his way, that is what he is paid for, to coach the team the way he sees fit.
After the Paraguay match, Lineker and Wright and poss Shearer or Hansen were giving the impression that England were in dire straits, they weren't, that was Mark Knopfler...sorry.
Paraguay were a well organised and strong team, and all the teams have subsequently suffered in the heat of the early games. I think England did well and will do well tonight against T&T, we will see how Sweden cope with Paraguay.
I wonder what we would all prefer, 1-0 all the way to becoming champions of the world, or swashbuckling gung ho encounters that see us make our excuses at the quarter or semi-final stage.
I hope for a bit of both, but winning the world cup is the ONLY reason for coming to Germany, it was never the taking part that counted.
As long as England do not fear anyone...ie; Brazil 2002, we can win these finals.
PS. Watched GMTV this morning and had the utmost displeasure of listening to the showaddywaddy England world cup song, listen to it if you dare, but remember that from that point on, the world will seem an oh so much sadder place to live.

Why are Europeans always looking to the weather to justify mediocre performances? More to the point, why do they imagine that African/Latin American/Middle Eastern footballers are somehow used to playing in hot weather?
The truth is that in these countries every effort is made to avoid playing football during the hottest part of the day. Also, a lot of the players from these countries ply their trade in Europe anyway, some since they were teenagers. Some African players may never even have played professional football in their own countries.
So quit whinging!

Good to see some support for Sven. I've never understood the bashings. Bad tactics, boring game? I remember the England games of the 80's and 90's when I was young. Talk about boring game. If anything, he's made England a more fluid, more playing team. His picks -- as ever! -- have mostly been spot on. The selection of Theo Walcott is now critisiced, yet look at other young players he's picked over the years at 17 or 18yo, in different leagues; Roberto Baggio, Rui Costa, Wayne Rooney. He stuck with Crouch when everyone was slagging him and look where he is now.
And -- he's still got the best competetitive record of any England coach. With the all the sh*t piled on this man, the former England managers must have really sucked bad.
At most, and hopefully, Sven's got six games to go. Why don't we just get behind the man?
