Paul Lockwood
Paul Lockwood's exhibition at the CAW gallery in Leamington shows a series of 40 computer-generated illustrations of animals, which he hopes will inspire others to work with computers.

Talking about the work, Paul said: "I'm trying to humanise the computer, to show it has an artistic potential.

"Lots are artists are scared of using computers, because they don't think they can make proper art, just because they're not traditional."

The artwork

Artwork by Paul Lockwood
Flamingus Pinkibirdia by Paul Lockwood
Paul's illustrations are a vivid, hypnotic and comic view of the animal world. His bright colours, from the limited 20-colour computer palette, also give them a very distinctive look.

Paul used to make his illustrations from lino cut prints and said the computer gave him a natural progression of the style. He said: "Computers are good at bold, graphic statements with areas of flat colour...making the images very immediate."

The show, on at the CAW Community Art Gallery, is the first time these works have been shown together.

Parrotus Loudisquawkius by Paul Lockwood
Paul is keen to spread his delight in computer illustration. He said: "I enjoy showing what can be done with computers, even with a very simple computer paint programme. I especially like workingn with kids because they're not frightened of computers at all. They love playing with what they can do."

He will be running a free workshop for kids on 10 May, if you're interested in taking part you can book a place by calling the gallery on 01926 888 333.

Ecology message

Artwork by Paul Lockwood
Piggus Porkipinkia by Paul Lockwood
Paul is currently writing about ecology and wants to have poetry accompanying the exhibition. With this, he hopes the work will make people think about ecology and the risk of extinction faced by some of the animals he draws.

So, the show will have a powerful message to go with its very strong visual impact.
