Anya (Emma Caulfield) had recently moved to Sunnydale when she met Cordelia, a kindred spirit who reads 'W' magazine and knows a Prada handbag from one from Payless. Cordelia had just caught Xander canoodling with Willow, so was feeling particularly low when she admired Anya’s pendant, which she tells Cordelia was a "good luck charm" from her father. To cheer her up, Anya gives Cordelia the pendant.
Cordelia wishes that her life were different, noting that her troubles all started when Buffy arrived: "I wish Buffy Summers had never come to Sunnydale". Suddenly Anya reveals herself as Anyanka, a demon who has the powers to grant wishes. Cordelia finds herself in a parallel universe version of Sunnydale, one overrun by the vampires: one without Buffy.
Giles identifies Anya’s brooch as one belonging to Anyanka, "sort of a Patron Saint of scorned women". Giles confronts Anya, and destroys her pendant, returning things to normal, robbing Anyanka of her power, and forcing Anya to begin life as a normal student.
Unable to persuade the demon D’Hoffryn to restore how powers, Anya tried to retrieve her pendant in 'Doppelgangland' using Willow’s growing skills as a witch, but only succeeded in bringing the alternate universe, vampire, version of Willow
into Sunnydale.
