Context

A user is testing a prototype and you want to find out all you can.

Overview

As the user is testing your prototype, get them to talk out loud about what they are doing and thinking.

How-to

  1. Figure out the journey(s) you would like to test. Think of a task you could set that would involve the user taking those journeys.
  2. Write a short script in which you ask the user to attempt to do some tasks. Test this script works with another person before doing it for real.
  3. Relax the user. Explain this is not a test and there are no wrong answers. Get the user to speak out what they are thinking and doing at all times.
  4. Get someone else to make notes and/or record the session.
  5. If the user asks questions, turn those questions back to the user. E.g. if the user asks "Will it play if I press that?", respond by asking "What do you think will happen if you press that?".
  6. You might want to consider getting an agency to do all this with you. If you do, be sure to go along while it's happening to watch and learn.
