Ian
won the £1,000 commission to create a piece of public art during
the Herefordshire art week.
Standing
about 4.5 metres high, the piece is a representation of the section
of the river that runs through Hereford, constructed from a mesh-covered
metal frame from which are suspended shards of plastic.
Members
of the public and passers by will be invited to help finish the
piece by hanging the strips, which will utilise various kinds of
recyclable household plastic and which will move in the breeze,
from the frame.
When
these strips are attached to the mesh, the effect will mimic the
flowing waters of the river.
"It’s
great to have been given this opportunity to show that art does
not have to be inaccessible, that it can be fun as well as conveying
a message – in this case, the importance of recycling non-biodegradable
items," Ian said.
And
I’m going to be making it on the banks of the river itself, which
is fantastic."
