Origins of the window

The sequence of windows in St Mary's begins with prophets foretelling the coming of Christ and features Eve, Moses and the Burning Bush. The story continues with Man's redemption: the Nativity, the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, the Assumption, the Crucifixion, the Deposition and the Harrowing of Hell, the Transfiguration, the Ascension and the Pentecost. High up on the north side of the central aisle we find (astonishingly) the enemies of the Church such as Herod and Nero. The Red Devil can be found on the West end - thought to be the people's, rather than the priest's, part of the church - and was a warning intended to inspire good behaviour
