My name is Martin Sugarman and as Archivist of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX) - founded in 1923 - of the UK, and including the Commonwealth, for the past 12 years, I have been immersed in, and conducting research at our Museum on, the above topic - including the part played by the world-wide Jewish community in previous conflicts. If any members have questions on this wide and varied subject, I am happy to respond. .

My association with Jews in war-time is very scant,I remeber a little chap having just been called up,joining my battery at Fort Borstal, and befriended him as he,as were so many spending his first time away from home AND it the midst of a crowd of Gentiles. He did'nt need to fear as he was absorbed into the battery without any comment as to his religion.I'm sorry but I have forgotten his name. But Jubelitski and Moe Levy,in the 170 battery, I remember quite well. But the chap I recall most vividly was Peter Emmerick,of native of Berlin. He was one of the children of a aryan father and a Jewish mother. He and his brother were just two who were allowed to leave Germany in the Thirties, both finishing up in,I think,Rhodesia. When the war started Peter volunteered for the South African Army and eventually joined the Raiding Support Regiment then, late 1943, being formed up.A unit of volunteers to fight with the SOE in Occupied Europe.Yugoslavia and Greece was our main theatres of operations. Peter, through his brother and the Red Cross, tried to maintain contact with his mother, who had had to stay behind in Germany. I'm sure I don't have to explain the position in which his mother found herself.Under pressure from Julius Schliesher, his father had divorced his mother.I was with him when he recieved words that his mother was OK as she had been transfered to a 'Holiday Camp'?, at a place called Buchenvald!

Yes, we have 60,000 Jewish Chaplains cards at our museum (kept by the Chaplains in WW2) and we know they are incomplete.

Many Jews fought in SOE, the SAS, Commandos and Paras, LRDG, etc - I have researched this and written various published papers - some will be posted on this site soon by Ron Goldstein. See the backnumbers pf the Jewish Historical Society of England and the Journal of Military History.

See the AJEX web site About links for some further guidance - or come and visit our museum free for a talk and tour - by appointment.
