I was teaching 4.5 - 5 year olds at a school in Brentwood during the war. When the air raid warning went we had to file out to the shelter which was in the playground (surface shelter - like a big flat). everyone was told to bring a cushion to sit on in the shelter. One child would take my handbag, another the class register and I had to carry a little girl who couldn't walk.

The children didn't forget the routine once. They couldn't leave until they were all collected which was sometimes up to 8 o'clock in the evening. Teachers today don't have to contend with such hardships.

I did this in the day time and ARP in the evenings.
