SHOULD WE EVACUATE?

I remember them saying that twice they went down to the boat with me and my sister who was three, and twice they went back home again, because my mother said that whatever she had to face, she would rather face together than go and leave my father behind. So she was left to face it together. They would have walked out of a fairly new house in Amherst, and it would have meant leaving all their furniture and belongings behind, and I think that she felt that it was better to stay than to go. As it turned out, I think she was right. I think a lot of families were broken up, after all if the child is five when they leave and ten when they come back the father doesn鈥檛 know much about that period in their life and it did make for an awful lot of heartache when the families were brought back together again.
