I had joined the Red Cross in 1942. My twin had joined the army and was in Irac. For three and a half years I was a red cross nurse. in 1944, I married a patient, His name was Frank Dowsing. He was injured in Italy, on a motorbike. Frank was a despatch rider, and they were moving on the way to Rome. We were not allowed to mix with the patients in this manner, however we became friends. Were were married in October 1945. The wedding was very basic. I was married in a costume. My dress was blue and very smart. I wore a pale blue blouse with it. I had red roses. My sister was my Bridesmade. I had a hat with feathers and a veil. We were married by licence at St Peters in Leicester. I wanted to be married there beacause I was christened and confirmed at St Peters. We had no honeymoon, but we had a reception. I was a butchers daughter, so we had a good spread, with Ham, and cold meat and fruit. If you were married during this time you could receive extra rations. My mother made me a wedding cake with rich iceing. We had a decent knees up.
My "do" was at a friends house, in the city, becasue I had to live there to be marruied there. So, I moved in for a while.
We went to the cinema, at the Floral Hall. We managed to get a box which overlooked the stage.
