18 鈥 Kate Higgins worked at the old timber-framed Shakespeare Hotel, and talks about its requisitioning during the War.

鈥 When it was handed back, they came to see it first of all, the four directors, when it was handed back, came and looked round it and it was very knocked about; you see, this lovely oak staircase that went up from the front door which of course they took away altogether, was all belted about, you can imagine with RAF personnel marching round and the directors didn鈥檛 feel that they could get it back to how they liked it 鈥hey said if we get a good offer we shall sell it. And they did, they had this offer from the Trust House.. Mr Higgins, on being told it was sold to Trust House, he said 鈥楳y God.鈥
鈥 I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 the old Tudor house that it was.鈥
