"The Army pay was very little really, I used to get 39 shillings a week, and 17 shillings of that was for me, and the rest was for the two children, I think it was about 13 shillings for two children. It was a struggle. Then the school decided that it was too risky to keep the children there. The military were after the school which they took over, and the school, all the children were sent away to Yorkshire. Immediately, after they’d gone, within days, I had my calling up sort of papers, to, to go actually to Birmingham and work in British Small Arms — munitions. My father was very, very cross about it, and advised me, before the time came to go and get a job in a military area, get a job attached to the military, which I did. And, subsequently I was drafted into what is now known as GCHQ."
