HMS Indomitable ablaze. 12th August 1942
In his story 鈥淚n the Main, Here and There鈥, Dugg Wakefield wrote about his ship HMS Phoebe and when describing its part in Operation Pedestal to relieve embattled Malta, he wrote,
鈥淧hoebe鈥檚 job was to provide extra High Angle Fire protecting 鈥業ndomitable鈥. I cannot go into all the details but we saw many sad sights; our worst personal experience was seeing Stukas and 88鈥檚 diving straight through the barrage we lay over Indomitable and hitting her with at least two bombs.鈥
Mr Wakefield has now found old photographs taken from Phoebe during the German attack on the aiiircraft-carrier. Although the prints are small and faded, they do illustrate the severity of naval operations in the Mediterranean in 1942.
This photograph is of the aircraft-carrier ablaze as a result of the attack.
Mr Wakefield who understands the terms and conditions, has given permission for his photographs to appear on the site. They and this note are submitted by Market Harborough Branch, Royal British Legion.
