Before the war, the Casualty Commandant, Mr. C.J. Clark arranged for St John's staff and Red Cross staff to cover the First Aid post, opposite the parish church.
We had very little nursing to do, but we were kept quite busy. Our first job, which was a bit gruesome, was to make hundreds of shrouds, because we expected to be invaded. These were made of hessian.
We had hundreds of soldiers billeted in the town and we were sent their socks to be darned.
At the First Aid post, we had a gas cleansing section, again because they were so sure that we would be invaded. It was still well used because there was a scabies outbreak amongst the soldiers, which needing treating, but the male staff did that!
We worked very closely with the local hospital and used to provide staff there sometimes.
We spent a lot of time walking around the town, with our tin hats on, as we had to answer every siren and go to our First Aid post.
