I was born in Crook down by Richard’s Yard. I was born in 1940 and was called up when I was a baby because I had the same name as my Dad.
When my mother got my call up papers she took me down to the drill hall in the pram and she went to the man behind the desk and said
‘I think you have made a mistake’.
The man behind the desk said
‘ We don’t make mistakes he is just trying to skive.’
Mam said
‘Wait a minute and I’ll bring him in and she took me in in the pram.
He said
‘Oh dear it looks as though we have made a mistake this time.’

So I didn’t have to go to war when I was a baby!!
