This article was written by Mohammed Ahktar.
My father Mohammed Ibrahim joined the Indian army under the British Empire during the Second World War.
He joined the Army at the age of 18 and retired in 1958.Whilst in the armed forces he was an (MT) driver and travelled to many different countries e.g Burma,Bengal,Java Sumatra,Australia,Ceylon(Columbo was where my father and his friend had a photograph taken together),Cyprus, Turkey and the Middle East in the course of duty.
My father before his death in 1992,used to talk about his time in the army.He would remember many terrifying and bad experiences he had during World War II.He saw dead bodies, people and soldiers starving and fellow soldiers who were injured due to being captured by the Japanese soldiers. His cousin was captured and injured but he was lucky to escape. The Japanese soldiers were very cruel to the Prisoners of War from both the British Army and the Indian Army soldiers.
Despite all the suffering, my father was very proud of the Bravery and Service medals that he received whilst serving in the army.He managed to retain these medals for a long time after the war.
My father came over to the UK in the early sixties and he worked in varios textile firms and foundries until he retired due to ill health in 1987.
