Sheltering in Leicester
"We didn鈥檛 have Anderson shelters, we didn鈥檛 go underground. We had a brick built air raid shelter and we used it to play in. We never went out in to the shelter we used to go in the cupboard under the stairs. A plane was being chased and it just dropped it bombs. That was about it, but there was always the threat. I remember taking my gas mask when the air raid sirens went.

Celebrating VE Day
We had a street party, tables all down the street and the piano came out of the house. My dad played the piano all day long, everybody singing, probably 鈥楻oll out the Barrel鈥. I can鈥檛 remember too much but I can remember the street parties. We all had the flags out. By VJ Day (Victory in Japan 15 August 1945) it meant that the war was completely over.鈥
