Aladdin and his wonderful lamp 1943

Part 1.

During The War there were always schemes of one kind or another to raise money for The War Effort and this story relates to one small event in which I was proud to take part.
The picture with this story shows The Children of Miss Peate's class ( the smiling Lady) in the various Costumes designed and made by Miss Peate for the Pantomime Alladin. Miss Peate also arranged all the music and in fact will always be remembered as a Lady who was a very hard working , talented and musical person devoted to the well being of all of her Pupils.
You will see from the placard, that the pantomime was being performed to raise money for The Town's Aid To Russia Fund.
I can still recall all the names of the children in the picture even after over Sixty years and we were all very proud to have taken part in this event.
I also remember taking part in Waste Paper and Silver Paper Collections to raise money for Spitfire, Warship, Salute The Soldier and other War Fund raising efforts..

Part 2.

On D-Day 6th. June 1944 we were all assembled for Morning Prayers, which was an every day occurence in all schools at one time.
On this occasion we sensed that this was to be a different assembly to the usual one and The Head Master, Mr. Powell,
told us that we were living through an event which we would remember for the rest of our lives.
He proceeded to advise us of the landing of the Allied Armies on the beaches of Normandy.
We were then asked to sing our National Anthem, which we all did with great enthusiasm and everyone was standing rigidly to attention.
