I was in the Territorial Army before the war in the Royal Norfolks. That was a very social life.
I was called up to the Regular Army just before the war started. I was Adjutant at the Royal Military Police Depot just outside Aldershot. Later I was transferred to the 15th Scottish Division where I was Assistant Provo Marshall responsible for the disciplining of a division of some 20,000 men.
At the time of D-Day I went over to France. That was some three days after D-Day. I remember D-Day well because as soon as you landed you got the smell of dead bodies and dead cattle.
It was an interesting life because I came across many interesting people. I remember being deputed once to look after the Princess Royal when she made a visit to one of our depots, where I was the Adjutant.
I remember the Canadians being near us at Aldershot. They were extraordinarily nice and I kept in touch with some of them after the war.
I remember having to reconcile things with men whose families had been bombed out in London and the like.
I don't think I would have missed the war for anything. Being a senior officer one came across many interesting people including Royalty.
