8 SMUGGLING
There was no rationing in the Republic of Ireland. It was customary for busloads of people from the North to go to the nearest town 鈥渁cross the border鈥 and return with baskets full of eggs, butter, ham, tinned fruit and meat and anything else they could acquire. Much of this merchandise was confiscated on the return journey at the customs post, but still many people got their goods through. My father disapproved vehemently of all this 鈥渃ontraband鈥 and nearly choked on his food when we were invited to his parents鈥 home where his unmarried sister, an ardent smuggler, prepared a family feast for us!
