One Saturday tea time a girl in our class at school told me 鈥測our brother's home". I said he can't be - he's in France, but he was. I hardly recognized him. He'd come straight from the battlefield. They'd been in a big battle in Boulogne and they had to dig themselves in, with no water or food. They were eventually rescued and brought back to England and on the train up to Durham. He was able to get a train to Sunderland to call in for two hours to see his family, and then he had to report to Brancepeth. He hadn鈥檛 been washed or shaved and his uniform was all dirty. Usually when they came home on leave they brought their ration book but he didn't have anything. Mother sent me out to the Pork shop to get pork sandwiches for him.
