I lived in London during the Blitz, and then in 1942 was called up to the ATS. Before D-Day I was sent to GHQ at Helmslow to help with the movement of troops for the invasion. Afterwards, men were coming back home, and they had about 400 of them at GHQ. A few of us ATS girls decided to hold a concert for them. Eight of us dressed up in gas capes and army bloomers (khaki and down to your knees) and danced the can-can for the men. They were stamping their feet and banging the tables - it was bedlam! An officer had a little dog and I sang 'How much is that little doggy in the window' holding the dog in my arms.
I met my husband during the war when I was in Edinburgh, he was in the Military Police.
A short while ago I was passing a charity shop in Southwold and I heard the song 'How much is that little doggy in the window'. I looked in and saw a woman holding a toy dog which was singing the song. It reminded me on that concert so I bought the dog, but it's refused to sing since that first day, but it brought it all back to me.
