As a young child ,I grew up with my father telling me stories about the war .One of the saddest stories was about his young cousins ,Pickles and Margaret who were 7 and 10 .Whilst he and his sister Betty used to love visiting their cousins and playing the usual childhood games ,they also took delight in collecting shrapnell.
As Laura and Margarets home in Ewhurst Road backed onto a railway there were a few near misses .My father recalls being quite jealous when a large uxb landed in their garden .He recalls how loving but strict their uncle was ,no one was alowed to talk at mealtimes .He also remembers how the children had some black dolls and how unusual this was,but the father was in atrade union and belived and fought for the rights of all people whatever their colour.
When the house was bombed and the family were all killed ,the awful reality of war suddenly became apparent .My father has never really got over the death of his cousins .
I wonder if there is anyone who remembers Laura or Margaret ,as any childhood friends would have been as devastated as my father was .
