My father has always told me about his aunt ,uncle and young cousins who were killed as aresult of a bomb falling on their house at Ewhurst Road Catford/Lewisham.
The parents were William and Elsie and the girls ,Laura (pickles )age 7 ,and Margaret age 10 .
My dad, Michael, remembers finding the war an exciting time ,he and his cousins used to collect shrapnell .But after their sad deaths the reality of war was devastating for him and his family.
I was able to see the very sad incident reports of the bombing ,thanks to the help of the staff at Lewisham local archives .Sadly we could not find the gravestone for the spiller family ,though we found the site ,apparantly a lot of graves were lost during the war .
We found their names and details on the C.W.G civilian roll of honour ,but for some reason their names were not recorded on the civilian war memorial at the Hither Green cemetery.I am trying to find details from the local paper so that there might be some more tangible evidence of their life and deaths.
As a child I grew up with the story of what happened and feel the need to try and record their story for my father .
